Florent Schmitt: La Tragédie de Salomé

Yannick Nézet-Séguin CONDUCTOR
“Conducting without a score, Nézet-Séguin was superb in his
architectural control [of Franck’s Symphony in D Minor] and
blistering in his delineation of the work's emotional trajectory.”

Under the baton of international star conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin,
the Orchestre Métropolitain performs the rarely-recorded symphonic
poem La tragédie de Salomé by French composer Florent Schmitt (18701958). Maestro Nézet-Séguin also conducts César Franck’s Symphony in
D minor.
In Schmitt’s first version of the piece, Salomé was a one-hour ballet
scored for only 20 musicians. In 1910, Schmitt reduced the work’s length
by half, while greatly expanding its orchestration. This shorter version is
better known and is the one recorded by Nézet-Séguin, the Orchestre
Métropolitain. Each of its two parts consists of a long, slow movement
followed by one or more fast dances — a beautifully-wrought,
symmetrical structure with vast contrasts in mood.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin is one of the most sought-after young conductors
in the world today. In June 2010, he became Music Director Designate of
the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the “big five” U.S. orchestras. While
his PO duties are set to begin in September 2012, Nézet-Séguin
continues as Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra
where, in 2008, he succeeded Valery Gergiev; he also continues as
Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain
in Montreal, a position he has held since March 2000, and as Principal
Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008.
Founded in 1981 by graduates of faculties and conservatories of Music in
Québec, the Orchestre Métropolitain has distinguished itself with its
unique artistic direction and pedagogical approach. Under NézetSéguin’s leadership, the orchestra’s “… players respond with wonderful
intonation and maintain the tension. The five-minute road to the climax
from there is well measured and built up, and the ending is lovely.”
