Jarmo Saari
Composer-Musician
Composer-musician Jarmo Saari is the leading Finnish guitarist of his generation. Since receiving his
master’s degree in jazz composition from the Sibelius Academy in 1999, Saari has realized his musical vision
in diverse environments – including his solo project Jarmo Saari SOLU and his many group projects
Trubamolli, Filmtet, Reuna, ZetaBoo and XL. His highly visual style of composition is also present in his
works for Finnish cinema, theatre and television.
Saari is known for his sonic landscapes and frequently multi-layered real-time sound processing – created
by the electric guitar, human voice or less familiar instruments, such as the theremin, baroque cello and
glass harp. Saari has collaborated as a musician and composer with Jukka Perko, Anna-Mari Kähärä, Trilok
Gurtu, Tapiola Choir, Pekka Kuusisto, Don Huonot, Nils Landgren, Michael Brecker, Espoo Big Band, Pepe
Deluxe, Esko Salminen, Mika Kaurismäki, Sivuun Ensemble and Tuomari Nurmio to name but a few.
Saari has performed in 30 countries and on 100 albums. In 2012, he received the Finland Prize for his
achievements as an artist. In addition Saari has produced the work of a dozen top Finnish artists, ranging
from jazz to tango, pop, rock or electronic music. He has collaborated with Tero Saarinen Company on Next
of Kin (2008), Scheme of Things (NDT1, 2009), Double Lives (nordwest, 2010) and Absent Presence (2011).
