TPD1039046 Digital Release date: January 2011 Zoë Beyers MENDELSSOHN South African-born star violinist, Zoe Beyers, currently Associate Leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, releases her Debut Disc on the TwoPianists Label. She joins Luis Magalhaes (piano) and the Stellenbosch University Camerata for a disc of unusual Mendelssohn works. The Concerto for Violin and Piano in D minor is coupled with the early Concerto in D minor and balanced with the String Symphony no.10 in B minor, to highlight the composer’s opulent string writing. Where Mendelssohn wrote of his famous octet that the players should inspire to be a symphony, the works chosen for this disk strives for the reverse. The Camerata performs without conductor, resulting in an element of intensity normally associated with a chamber performance. Simplicity of structure and translucence of texture supports the exuberant virtuosity of Mendelssohn’s writing. Zoë Beyers made her debut at age eleven with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and has been in demand as soloist and chamber musician in Europe and in her native South Africa. As Associate Leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra she is one of the youngest violinists to be appointed in this position. Zoë youth is matched to that of Luis Magalhaes, founder of TwoPianists Records and award-winning Portuguese pianist, as well as the recently established Stellenbosch University Camerata. Magalhaes regularly appears in concert with his wife, Nina Schumann, and has produced two disks to stunning international acclaim. The Stellenbosch Camerata, consisting of staff and students from Stellenbosch University in South Africa, burst onto the international scene with their first disk of the Vivaldi and Piazzolla Four Seasons, stunningly lead by Daniel Rowland. The combination of works on this all-Mendelssohn disk carries not only the simplicity of structure and translucence of texture of Mendelssohn’s works, but brings the element of virtuosity endemic to an ensemble performing without conductor. On offer is a youthful composer in his String Symphony no.10, the beautiful Violin Concerto in D minor and the tour-de-force Concerto for Violin and Piano in D minor. This disk is distributed under the TwoPianists Debut label that aims to provide a platform for young international musicians of excellence.
