Before an audience of over 200 Beit Issie Shapiro supporters, Abargil said, “It’s very easy to feel sorry for yourself. But no matter how many times you feel down, it’s how you get up that counts. The kids at Beit Issie Shapiro feel happy because they don’t look at what they don’t have. They look at what they do have.” (L-R) Ariella and Ariel Shandling, Uri Blackman Yoni Rechter A Smile of Hope Arab community raises unprecedented funds for BIS The Arab city of Kalansua held a Nawaf Zmero and Jean Judes fundraising event called “A Smile of Hope” to support Beit Issie Shapiro’s Sindian Center, which serves the Arab community in the Southern Triangle. The event raised a record breaking 300,000 NIS (USD $85,000) and was attended by 700 people. It is believed to be the largest fundraiser of its kind in an Arab community for an established Israeli charity. Nawaf Zmero, the organizer of the event and recipient of the President’s Prize for Volunteering said, “As someone with a disability myself, I have a great appreciation for Beit Issie Shapiro and our Sindian Center. The social change needed is already being felt in a very impressive way because we have been working for so long and so hard on inclusion! In addition to raising funds, we are creating an unprecedented cross-cultural dialogue between Jews and Arabs and between people with disabilities and without. We all have a common goal and want our children to be healthy and happy.” “Beit Issie Shapiro is a wonderful place and I’m excited to be here with you tonight,” began Yoni Rechter, a musician, singer and composer, at his gala evening held in support of BIS at Zappa, Herzliya. Rechter, an Israeli cultural icon, whose song, “Atur Mitschech” won the 66th Yom Ha’atzmaut competition for most popular Israeli song of all time, drew a crowd of over 300 supporters and friends of Beit Issie Shapiro. All enjoyed an evening of music and fun which was generously donated by Rechter.
