SHORT PRESENTATION
Augusto Arias was born in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1985. Son and grandson of musicians: his
father is an oboe soloist at Teatro Argentino de La Plata Orchestra, and his mother is a speech therapiest
for both actors and singers. He studied composition, conducting and piano at some of the best
institutions and with the best teachers in Argentina. He is permanently developing a double-side career
as Conductor and Composer with professional activities that include performances in Argentina, Mexico,
South Africa, Brazil and England.
As a conductor he has experience with orchestras, new music ensembles and choirs. His compositions
have been performed in several festivals, in concert halls and institutions in Argentina and other
countries. He believes that contemporary music is the result of a process along the history of music, in
which each kind of music has been influenced by the previous ones.
Augusto Arias feels music with passion and love. He aims to work with musicians as part of humanity
and tries to facilitate the best possible performances through sensitive interaction.
During 2013-14 Arias was established in South Africa for working as a conductor at North West
University -South Africa- and he leaded the NWU New Music Ensemble that premiered new pieces and
toured around South Africa. He also started post-graduate studies in composition under the guide of
Hannes Taljaard. Also in 2014, the pianist Horacio Lavandera selected him to be part of an important TV
program about Argentinian composers, Arias was one of the four composers to be selected.
Recently in 2014, Arias premiered with success his first Opera Gruta de Ninfas in Argentina under his
baton with Erica Eloff (South Africa-England) and a great cast.
EDUCATION
2013-To present- Masters on Composition student under the guide of Prof. Hannes Taaljard at NWU
South Africa (90% done. It is expected to submit in june 2015)
2006/2011- Basic degree in Music Composition at National Quilmes University, Argentina. (four-year
study program. Licenciado)
2011-2012- Orchestral conducting at Collegium Musicum of Buenos Aires.
2012- Residency centred on conducting and composition at the North-West
University -South Africa - Invited by the composer Dr. Hannes Taljaard.
2011- Residence in Composition with Dr. Rodrigo Sigal at Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts.

2012- 2nd. Prize at conducting competition at Buenos Aires Collegium Musicum. This prize provided the
opportunity to conduct the Resident Orchestra during 2012 season
2012- His piece Walking in the dark night was included and performed in Morelia´s international
Contemporary Music Festival -Mexico-.
2010- Joint scholarship from National Quilmes University and the Mexican Centre for Music and Sonic
Arts -Mexico- (CMMAS) for a four-month composition residence at CMMAS.
2012- Joint scholarship from National Quilmes University -Argentina- and North-West University of South
Africa for a five-week residence in composition and conducting in South-Africa.
2014- Pianist Horacio Lavandera selected one of Arias pieces to be recorded on Lavandera’s TV Program.
Arias was one of the four composers to be selected.

2014 World Premiere of his first Opera Gruta de Ninfas for soprano, baritone, female choir, ensemble of
eight musicians and live electronics. In the same program was included Lamento d’ Arianna by C.
Monteverdi -Argentina.

Augusto Arias´ pieces were performed in several halls, festivals and institutions in Argentina, Mexico,
South Africa and England.
At the moment Arias is finishing his Master Degree in composition for orchestra and voices under the
guide of Dr. Hannes Taljaard at NWU South Africa.
During his residence at CMMAS (Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts), he attended several courses
and masterclasses by Roger Reynolds (USA), Rodrigo Sigal (Mexico), Javier Alvarez (Mexico), Luca
Belcastro (Italy), Hannes Taljaard (South Africa), and Cristohpe Desjardins (France)
