A voice that bridges the ancient to the modern, a mesmerizing stage presence that holds you captive with
an energy and soul that captivates.Sona was truly born to be on stage. She believes that she is fuelled by a
very unique primal feminine energy called Shakti from the goddess, Durga. She & her band are simply
called SONA, which means ‘Golden’ in Hindi & they have an electric live act.
She loves to infuse ancient & modern poetry with sounds that blend Folk roots, Sufiana kalaam,
Bollywood, Gypsy & Eastern Baul with contemporary Rock, Funk, Blues & World dance music.
Sona grew up all across India thanks to her father’s itinerant job. While she trained in Hindustani classical
music for over 12 years, these constant moves ensured that she was not influenced by any one particular
school of music & developed her own unique style.
Sona formed her current band in Mumbai where she currently resides & and also teamed up with well
known composer & record producer Ram Sampath, to release her solo debut album- SONA. This album
went on to win all the awards in its category in the year 2006/07. Her video singles Tere Ishq Nachaya ,Abhi
Nahin Ana, Aja Ve& Bolo Na topped all the charts on release & are still hot on radio playlists.
All this also led to a collaboration with the Australian band INXS for a desi version of Afterglow. This
collaboration & video also charted on iTunes & Sona has gone on to collaborate with the pop-rock legend
David Bowie on a desi version of his classic, ‘Let’s Dance’ & other international DJ's like John Fleming from
the UK.
She is amongst the first two artistes from India, along with Kailash Kher to be featured on the world music
series called "The Music Voyager" on National Geographic. She released her video single , shot in the
beautiful edgy New York City , DILJALE, the song representing the night soundscape of Raat/Din in 2009
and this went on to become the highest streaming video in the global Nokia 22 country network , the
second was a video by Pearl Jam. The follow up to “Diljale” is “Paas Aao Na” , the day soundscape of
Raat/Din . Self assured, epitomizing free spirit and memories ... Diljale & Paas Aao Na embody the
transition of night into day and are also symbolic of the loneliness and beauty of the cities we live in.
Sona & her band played mainstage on 23rd October 2010 in the prestigious Jodhpur RIFF (Rajasthan
International Folk Festival), voted amongst the top 25 music festivals of the world by the SONGLINES
magazine & have also played to stadiums in their country. Sona and her amazing band started last year by
performing at the prestigious Lincoln Centre in New York City and followed it up with a stadium gig of
40,000 Punjabis in Chandigarh and have been playing several gigs around the country since and plan to
continue the world music trial across the globe in the coming days.
Sona has also started her playback journey and has several Bollywood releases & more in the coming year.
