Corders Eye Society, San Francisco, CA (moderator) RESEARCH PROGRAM My research program has centered on my subspecialty interest of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. This specialty of ophthalmology includes the midface, orbit, lacrimal system, optic nerve, thyroid associated orbitopathy, aesthetics, and trauma. My work at San Francisco General Hospital has also provided research opportunities in resident and medical student education, trauma, and AIDS. My current areas of research include: 1. Traumatic optic neuropathy: I plan to develop an NIH multicenter trial testing the efficacy of megadose corticosteroids vs. placebo in the management of this problem. We have obtained CHR approval to conduct a nationwide survey of traumatic optic neuropathy cases, which will be necessary in determining the feasibility of this study. The survey began March 1, 2005. 2. Management of facial paralysis: Current research is focusing on the use of new devices to Stuart R. Seiff, MD - 40 3. 4. 5. help with lower facial suspension in these patients. Thyroid associated orbitopathy: We have just finished work correlating the clinical activity of TAO with changing levels of thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin. We are now applying this information to the immunologic modification of this acute disease process. The development and use of patient data bases in research and education: We recently looked at the opacification rate of posterior lens capsules after cataract surgery at SFGH. A manuscript has also been submitted demonstrating the need for antibiotic prophyllaxis in cataract surgery for the prevention of post operative endophthalmitis. SFGH/UCSF Mobile Eye Service Van as platform for ocular epidemiologic studies: The SFGH/UCSF Mobile Eye Service Van was placed in operation in Sept 2004. In addition to providing clinical screening services to the SF Community Health Network, the Van provides a platform for ocular epidemiologic research. An Asian Eye Study has been implimented and is ongoing. In addition, a study has been recently completed looking at the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in the screened population My 5 most significant publications in these areas in the last 5 years are: 1. 2. 3. Significance: Demonstrated that post operative diplopia could be decreased by a modified decompression techique. SRS provided the patients and did the final data analysis. SRS wrote the manuscript. Carter, S.R., Seiff, S.R., Choo, P.H., Vallabhanath, P.: Lower eyelid CO2 laser rejuvenation. Ophthalmology 108: 437-441, 2001. Significance: This paper showed the utility of using CO2 laser resurfacing to remove lower lid rhytids, a very difficult problem in plastic surgery. SRS provided many of the patients and did the final data analysis. SRS wrote much of the manuscript. Stewart JM, David S, Seiff SR: Amniotic membrane graft in the surgical management of cryptophthalmos. Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 18: 378-380, 2002. Significance: This was one of the earliest papers showing the importance of amniotic membrane in treating difficult problems in ophthalmic plastic surgery. SRS provided the patient and participated in manuscript preparation. Stuart R. Seiff, MD - 41 4. 5. Seiff S.R.: The fat pearl graft in ophthalmic plastic surgery. Orbit 21: 105-109, 2002. Significance: This paper demonstrates the utility of fat pearl grafting in the management of difficult problems in ophthalmic plastic surgery. SRS refined the technique, provided patients, and prepared the manuscript. Dragan L, Seiff SR, Lee D: Longitudinal correlation of TSI and the clinical activity in thyroid associated orbitopathy. Accepted Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Significance: Demonstrated the correlation of clinical activity in TAO with changes in TSI antibody levels, providing an important clinical tool in the management of these patients.
