E-VISION Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences FACULTY & STAFF HIGHLIGHTS Andrew Harrison, MD, Michael Lee, MD, C. Gail Summers, MD, and Martha Wright, MD, were named to the Mpls.St.Paul Magazine 2016 “Top Doctors” list in the field of ophthalmology. Andrew Harrison, MD, and Ali Mokhtarzadeh, MD, attended the spring meeting of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery (ASOPRS) in Ojai, CA, June 3-5. Harrison moderated the Eyelid Session and Mokhtarzadeh was inducted into the society. Harrison also attended the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery meeting, the largest multi-specialty cosmetic surgery meeting, in Las Vegas, NV, June 7-12 where he gave two talks: Bulletproof Blepharoplasty and Ectropion vs Retraction: Diagnosis and Management. Erik van Kuijk, MD, PhD, J. Douglas Cameron, MD, MBA, Michael Lee, MD, and Martha Wright, MD, served as Oral Board Examiners at the American Board of Ophthalmology June 2-5 in San Francisco, CA. J. Douglas Cameron, MD, MBA, was a discussant on optical coherence tomography angiography of the macula after plaque radiotherapy of choroidal melanoma during the annual meeting of the American Ophthalmological Society in Colorado Springs, CO on May 20. He also delivered lectures on the pathophysiology of ocular inflammation, ocular trauma, and ocular surgery at The Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology in Waterville, Maine, June 13-14. Health Talk Linda McLoon, PhD, was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for her work as Vice President (2015-16) and her five years of service on the Board of Trustees for her scientific section in the society (EY Section, “Eye Movements, Strabismus, Amblyopia, and Neuro-Ophthalmology”). Michael Lee, MD, received a Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) for his participation in committee work, authorship, manuscript reviews, and efforts at the annual meeting. He also interviewed for a podcast on the AAO website on the approach to optic atrophy in older adults. June 2016 Vol. 5, No. 6 FELLOWS & RESIDENTS GRADUATES Four fellows, four residents, and one orthoptic student will be completing their respective programs this academic year. Alexander Davis, MD, PhD (cornea fellow) will be joining the Dean McGee Eye Institute, University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Pradeep Mettu, MD, (oculoplastics fellow) will be continuing his training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Michael Nolan, MD, (pediatric ophth fellow) will be joining the Maine General Hospital in Waterville, Maine. Kaitlyn Wallace Nolan, MD, (neuro-ophth fellow) will be joining the Miles Hospital in Damariscotta, Maine. Daniel Apple, MD, (resident) will begin a vitreoretinal fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Jessica Gomez, MD, (resident) will begin a vitreoretinal fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas John O’Neill, MD, (resident) will be joining the Edina Eye Physicians and Surgeons group in Edina, Minnesota. Sean Rivera, MD, (resident) will be joining ABQ Health Partners in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jessica Harder, BA, (orthoptic student) will be joining Associated Eye Care in Stillwater, Minnesota RESIDENCY PROGRAM CHANGES Residency Program Changes beginning July 1, 2016. The ophthalmology residency program will begin the transition to five residents per year and increase to 15 residents by 2018. The curriculum will now focus on comprehensive ophthalmology in the first year, subspecialty training in the second year, and return to comprehensive plus surgical training in the third year. EYE BANK NEWS Richard Lindstrom Research Grant Award The Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) has recently awarded the 2016 Richard Lindstrom Research Grant to the University of Minnesota, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences for grant proposal, “Ex Vivo Expansion of Cadaveric Limbal Stem Cells Using Cadaveric Serum as Culture Medium and Descemet’s Membrane as Carrier Substrate.” The award is funded at $5,000 dollars, the max amount available for funding.
