A Fresh Look
at Fashion
There’s something invigorating and exhilarating about the air in spring that makes
you want to go out there and explore the world as it reawakens from its long
slumber.
And so it is with Tmag. We want you to explore with us. We want you to SEE, touch,
and discover the latest eyewear fashion and fashion accessories and to meet the
mavericks behind them. Tmag will captivate your eyes twice a year with the hottest
designs, colours, and trends.
We launched Tmag so we could share all of our discoveries from around the world
with you. You see, in publishing our monthly magazine for Canadian eyecare
professionals, we realized that there was a much larger audience of people out
there who love learning about the latest eyewear fashion trends, innovations, and
new technologies in the eyewear-eyecare field, and eye health.
We also felt that the timing was perfect given that eyeglasses have come such
a long way since their days as mere visual prostheses. Today, they’re fashion
accessories in their own right. They’re beautiful, extravagant, colourful, subtle, or
sophisticated… They allow you to stand out, to express your personality and to
show who you are through your style.
So now, not only can you count on the expert advice of your eyecare professional,
but you can also count on Tmag to help you find frames that will tell a story, that
will make people talk, that will get you compliments, that you will love – frames
that are anything but ordinary.
In its debut issue, Tmag is proud to present Nicole Kidman, the new face of the
Jimmy Choo luxury eyewear and fashion accessories brand, on its cover page and
in a feature story on page 8. You’ll also meet Jérémie Tarian, a true rising star in the
designer eyewear game. His cheeky glasses have already won over some pretty
tough critics and his ads have turned more than a few heads. You’ll also learn about
those neon shades that all the Hollywood celebrities are wearing. And you’ll be
invited to enter a contest where you could win one of ten $200 gift-certificates.
Sounds fun…? Then turn the page and see for yourself what Tmag has to show you!
Enjoy!

For the first time in its history, Jimmy Choo has called on
an international celebrity to embody its image. Oscar winning
actress, Nicole Kidman, was unveiled as the muse of the luxury
eyewear and accessories brand in this initial fall-winter 2014
campaign, photos of which appear in our magazine.
Produced by Swedish photographer Mikael Jansson, the campaign
portrays Nicole Kidman in a series of images that hint at empowered
glamour, a pet theme of the Jimmy Choo brand.
Exploring film noir themes and referencing the tension of Hitchcock’s
empowered heroines, the mood of the campaign captures “the
multi-faceted qualities of the Jimmy Choo woman for this season – strong,
sexy, with a beguiling sense of mystery,” said Sandra Choi, Creative Director.
Drawing inspiration from Jimmy Choo’s latest fragrance, also called
FLASH, the sunglasses presented in the campaign feature sparkling
Swarovski crystal, capturing that moment of mystery and euphoria that
every woman feels when getting ready for a special occasion.
The perfect combination of shaded lenses and shimmering crystals creates
an alluring, eye-catching look. The front part of the frames is adorned with
an intricate glitter fabric, which creates a dazzling and sparkling effect by
capturing the light of the sun, the stars, and flashes.
FLASH sunglasses are available in four sophisticated hues: nude with
gold/nude crystals and shaded brown lenses, black with black crystals and
shaded grey lenses, blue with blue/black crystals and shaded grey lenses,
black with silver crystals and shaded grey lenses.

A newcomer to the eyewear business, Jérémy Tarian has already come to
represent unconventionality within the norms of convention. This self-made
eyewear designer may have escaped the shadow of his famous father (celebrated
eyewear designer, Alain Mikli) but he hasn’t rejected the standards of quality
and excellence which are his legacy.
10 Spring Summer 2014
Interview
We met Jérémy Tarian at his stand at the Vision Expo East in New York surrounded by the
daring images used in his last advertising campaign. Aspects of his personality were already in
evidence: a man who enjoys intrigue, the human body in its natural state, and stirring things up
without crossing the boundaries of good taste.
How does someone become an eyewear designer?
In my case, by accident! I actually studied finance but while travelling to learn other languages,
I ended up interning at a Berlin eyewear company (ic! berlin). What was supposed to be a
three-month internship turned into two years! I started out in Accounting but quickly moved to
their design department. My first two or three designs led to more, and eventually, to winning a
Silmo d’Or in 2008, which pretty much launched my career as an eyewear designer!
But isn’t designing glasses a far cry from finance?
Sure, but family legacy aside, what really attracted me to the eyewear business was that it
combined so many disciplines: medical, technical, artistic, fashion, etc. My finance background
gave me the confidence to launch my own brand, which was important to me because I wanted
to control every aspect of the business, from making the products to marketing them.
Where do you get your inspiration?
After Berlin, and before returning to Paris, I lived in New York for two years, so there is a
lot of New York in my first collection. My “Washington Square” frames are named after the
neighbourhood where I lived. The universities in that area actually inspired the retro, professor
look of these frames. And my “Woody” frames are obviously a nod to Woody Allen. So
personalities, styles, and places are my inspiration for new models, as well as large reserves of
creativity.

Interview
Of course, I’m very mindful
of the opticians who sell my
products, but I also believe you
have to keep the whimsical
aspect of design alive and make
your products fun to wear.
Do you have any favourite materials?
Definitely acetate. Actually, we’re going to be
imbedding fine metal plates in it soon.
Are there new avenues you’d like to
explore over the next few years?
First, we have to grow the Jérémy Tarian
brand (laughs!). We’d like to develop the
brand without sacrificing what makes it
distinctive and exclusive. I’m not sure how
we’ll do this, but we’ll definitely get there!
And what is your idea of “great eyewear”?
There are many factors involved in making great eyewear but,
in my opinion, the most important is to love your own products.
A good pair of glasses is one that you would want to wear
yourself. Of course, I’m very mindful of the opticians who sell
my products, but I also believe you have to keep the whimsical
aspect of design alive and make your products fun to wear. You
can’t just make what your clients want. You also need to wow
them and to anticipate what will appeal to them, otherwise you
become irrelevant. And of course, you have to keep the end-users
in mind and anticipate what they’re going to think of your frames.
We also try to make glasses that focus less on revolutionary
design and more on small details, and especially on the quality
of the acetate. For example, we’ll use finely polished acetate to
make the glasses lighter. We also work a lot on our choice of
colours.

Good Light
The sun is synonymous with comfort and
pleasure. In recent years, it has also become a
source of concern, due to its harmful effects
on the skin. And so, UV protection creams
have quickly become the norm.
Real Protection
Since sunglasses are mostly worn for outdoor activities, they need to
continually provide the best UV protection possible, no matter what
type of sport or leisure activity you undertake.
Tinted, Polarized and Photochromic
But what about protecting your eyes from
UV rays? Your eyes are just as vulnerable, if
not more so, than your skin, so it’s imperative
that they receive excellent protection against
the sun’s harmful rays, which are responsible
for some serious eye conditions.
To enjoy the benefits of greater comfort and optimum vision, it’s
important to choose lenses that provide total (100%) protection
against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. These lenses are therefore ideal
for all-day use and will allow you to enjoy the sun every day without
risking the health of your eyes.
And since performance and style no longer have to be sacrificed to
obtain the best available protection, many manufacturers now offer a
wide range of tints, even trendy mirror lenses, which can be adapted
for both sports eyewear and your favourite fashion eyewear.
For boating and water sports enthusiasts, polarized lenses will reduce
those annoying reflections of the sun on the water, thus improving
your comfort and visual performance. Remember that most highperformance sunglasses are available in your prescription.
Photochromic lenses are also an excellent choice to protect your eyes
if you wish to switch between indoors and outdoors without changing
your glasses. By reacting automatically to changing light conditions,
these lenses not only filter UVA and UVB rays, but they also bring you
more comfort and greater visual performance.
Talk to your eye care professional about
which sun lenses are best for you.

Eye Health
Did you Know…?
DIABETES IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF BLINDNESS.
New studies revealed interesting, and in some cases, surprising
facts about type 2 diabetes, a widespread disease. These facts
include:
Not eating breakfast is believed to increase the risk of developing
type 2 diabetes by 1.25 times. Insulin secretion is stabilized by
having a balanced breakfast. “Skipping” meals on a regular basis
is equally harmful.
Many people drink “diet” soft drinks sweetened with aspartame in
order to reduce their risk of developing diabetes or aggravating
an existing condition. Yet, a study conducted in the United States
on 65 000 women showed that aspartame sweetener in soft
drinks is as damaging as sugar since significant consumption of
aspartame causes blood glucose levels to rise.
SMOKING IS NOT ONLY DAMAGING TO YOUR
LUNGS, BUT IT IS ALSO DAMAGING TO YOUR
EYES.
Indeed, smoking increases the risk of developing
age-related macular degeneration, an ocular disease
commonly referred to as AMD, by three to four times.
Smoking also increases the risk of diabetic retinopathy.
One out of five cases of cataracts in North America is
due to smoking. Cigarette smoke accelerates the aging
of the retina, making it more fragile, and among other
things, less resistant to the dangerous and harmful UV
rays. Another good reason to stop smoking!
26 Spring !
MYOPIA IS A RAPIDLY GROWING OCULAR
PROBLEM IN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES.
Occurring in childhood, it can increase up to about
the age of 16. Why is that? Too many hours spent on
activities requiring near or intermediate vision such
as watching TV, sitting in front of a computer screen,
reading, playing video games, and not enough time
spent playing outside. We’re serious; several studies
published in recent years have established the
fact. A better balance can make a difference and a
regular ocular-visual exam is recommended during
school years.

Perfect Glasses for your Face
C H O O S I N G
Your Frame
ROUND : Rectangular frames with a strong design add
definition to a round face.
SQUARE : Round glasses with subtler lines soften the
angles of a square face.
OVAL : An oval face can get away with wearing very large
frames and a wide variety of styles.
TRIANGULAR (or heart-shaped) : The proportions of a
triangular face can be balanced by choosing frames with
larger details in the upper part, such as Aviator or Cat’s
eye glasses.
Glasses Are a Lot Like Clothing
To showcase the unique structure of your face, you first
need to understand that the shape of a pair of glasses
may suit some people better than others. Much like the
clothes you wear, it’s important to choose glasses that
bring out your best features.
Following the simple rules illustrated in the above
graphics will help you avoid falling under the spell of
frames that look great on the rack, but not on your face!
Discover the types of glasses that look best on round
faces in this issue of Tmag.
One Face, Four Shapes
Finding the perfect pair of glasses without trying out the
thousands of pairs that are out there can seem like an
impossible challenge. Fortunately, knowing basic facial
geometry rules will greatly simplify the process.
Consult your
optician to
find the perfect
glasses for
your face!
Because, setting aside colours and materials, finding the
perfect pair of glasses means knowing the type of face
you have: round, square, oval or triangular.

Progressive Lenses:
W H AT
YO U
N EED
TO
K N OW
A huge breakthrough in the 1950s, progressive lenses have quickly been incorporated
into the everyday lives of the vast majority of
people over age 40.
These older style progressive lenses came
with adjustment challenges. These initial basic
lens designs were used for a broad range of
wearers with various prescriptions, whereas
each person has specific visual needs.
Fortunately, progressive lens designs have
dramatically changed and several manufacturers today offer high-performance progressive lenses that are comfortable and
easy to adapt to. These lenses are sometimes called customized or free form lenses.
Custom-made Progressive Lenses
The customization trend is no longer limited to clothing and shoes.
Recent technological advances mean that lens manufacturers are
now able to eliminate most of the adaptation that was sometimes
required with the older style progressive lenses. These customized
lenses offer enhanced vision in all distances.
Because everyone sees and uses their eyes differently, modern
techniques have been able to identify these highly specific variants
and transmit them to computers that create and design lenses. For
example, they take into account the types of activities that you engage
in, your habits, the required visual distance (near or far), the frame in
which the lenses will be installed, and even the contour of your face.
With the right equipment and the right tools, many manufacturers
have reached extremely high degrees of customization, much to the
delight of wearers who benefit from truly optimum vision. Clarity in
all directions at any distance, no matter where you look, more natural
and easier transitions when you change your focus, a wider visual
field, and, most importantly, a considerably reduced, even nonexistent, adjustment period.
Some people claim that these new types of customized progressive
lenses help them see even better than if they didn’t need correction.
Progress and comfort – now at your fingertips.
Talk to your eye care professional about which
type of progressive lens is best suited for you.
