• When foods are processed, they are stripped of natural chromium, making most American diets very low in chromium. Without adequate chromium, insulin is not optimally effective, and damage to insulin‐dependent systems can occur (Schroeder, 1968). This has led the FDA to recommend a daily chromium intake of at least 130 mcg to aid the transport of blood glucose across cell membranes, enabling the body to use this glucose for energy, rather than being stored as fat. • The recommended ratio of EPA to DHA is 3 parts EPA to 2 parts DHA, for optimal heart benefits, which is the ratio contained in Watkins Heart Health. Equal parts of EPA to DHA found in some other supplements, have been shown to compete with each other for binding sites in the body, and therefore, cancel each other out.

• There are different forms of glucosamine including glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and N‐acetyl‐
glucosamine. Most of the scientific research done to date on glucosamine has been done on glucosamine sulfate and it has recently shown the most positive results. • Dietary supplements that contain glucosamine often contain additional ingredients. These additional ingredients are frequently chondroitin sulfate, MSM, or shark cartilage. Some people think these combinations work better than taking just glucosamine sulfate alone. So far, researchers have found no proof that combining the additional ingredients with glucosamine adds any benefit.
• Some researchers think the “sulfate” part of glucosamine sulfate is also important. Sulfate is needed by the body to produce cartilage. This is one reason why researchers believe that glucosamine sulfate might work better than other forms of glucosamine such as glucosamine hydrochloride or N‐acetyl glucosamine. These other forms do not contain sulfate.
