Ear Institute Offers Sophisticated
Early Detection and Diagnosis
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening is typically the first step
in the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of hearing loss in
infants. In New York, all infants are screened at birth in the hospital, and if necessary, hospital staff will refer parents or caregivers to facilities such as the CHI supported Ear Institute for
further evaluation.
The accurate audiological evaluation of infants requires specialized tests. In older children, the audiologist can use a variety of
techniques and tests to determine degree and type of hearing
loss. “To put it simply, for infants, we can’t ask ‘Did you hear
that?’, as we do with young children,” said Jane R Madell, PhD,
Director of the Hearing and Learning Center at The Ear Institute.
We place parent and child in a dark test booth with a comfortable chair, give the baby a bottle, and perform the test while the
child sleeps.”

CHI Summer Reading Champ
Congratulations are in order for Sam
Kaplan, entering the third grade this
year at Grafflin Elementary School in
Chappaqua, N.Y. who achieved his
goal of reading 100 hours this summer.
Sam, who has wears 2 cochlear
implants says his inspiration to
achieve his goal came from his 2nd
grade teacher, Mrs. Giacomi. Although
reading is essential for the educational
development of all children, substantial amounts of reading
help hearing impaired children in areas where they face challenges: vocabulary, higher level language acquisition, and
abstract thinking. Go Sam!

Sandra Delapenha,MA, Supervisor, Clinical Audiology, at The
Ear Institute is a specialist in performing both otoacoustic
emissions (OE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
in babies.
“We use both these tests in our treatment of all young children
that come to us for services, but they are particular valuable in
measuring and assessing hearing loss in infants.”
When receiving sounds, the normally functioning ear reflects an
“echo” back into the ear canal. In the otoacoustic emissions
test, a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the
child’s ear. Sounds are then played and the “echo” response, or
lack of response, to this sound is then measured and analyzed.
The auditory brainstem response measures the brain’s reaction
to sounds played to the infant’s ears. Small electrodes are
placed on the child’s head to detect these responses. This test
measures how the hearing nerve responds to sounds and can
identify hearing loss.
The ABR tests require a child to be sleeping to be accurate.
“We tell parents and caregivers to bring sleepy, hungry babies.

Dr. Hoffman treats a young patient in the
new examination rooms.
The examination rooms are equipped with a large variety of sophisticated equipment which the doctors use to diagnose and treat
conditions of the ear. They complement the services offered in the
Ear Institute’s audiological test booths, cochlear implant programming rooms and therapy and consultation offices.
“We are grateful to our donors, whose gift enables us to enhance
our ability to provide a comprehensive array of services to the
children and families who come to us.” said Dr. Ronald Hoffman,
Co-Director of The Ear Institute. “Having these examination
rooms will enhance the multidisciplinary team approach we use
in patient care.”
In addition to all standard equipment, the rooms come equipped
with operating microscopes, used by Ear Institute doctors for
close examination and advanced evaluation of the ear, as well as
in-patient medical procedures, and sophisticated equipment
which allows for fiber optic imaging and documentation of the
ear nose and throat.

On the wettest day of the wettest June in recent memory,
over 200 enthusiastic partygoers attended The Children’s
Hearing Institute’s annual rooftop cocktail party on June 18th
at the Time Warner Center.
During the course of the day Mr. Wright gave a detailed
overview of the special services and accommodations that are
guaranteed by law to students with disabilities. In addition, he
provided helpful guidance in developing strategies for the
improvement of a student’s IEP, and in negotiation techniques
used when advocating for services.
The conference concluded with a lively panel made up of attendees from various professional disciplines, and of parents of
children with disabilities, who answered questions posed in
advance by the audience.
Sandra Vukosavljevic and Doug Boxer
Led by co-chairs Jason Boxer, Lisa Weinberg and Allison
Kunis, CHI supporters braved torrential rains to sip cocktails
and enjoy tasty hors d’ouvres provided by The Glazier Group.
The day concluded with a question and answer session
among conference attendees and parents, teachers,
advocates, clinicians and attorneys.
The large reception rooms cozily accommodated all guests,
who enjoyed spectacular views of Columbus Circle and
Central Park. During the course of the evening, the rain relented a bit and guests stepped out onto the Terrace to enjoy the
fresh air and Hudson River views.
The evening was capped off by a spectacular raffle. Almost
$50,000 was raised to benefit the Pediatric Hearing Aid Dispensary

In addition to all standard equipment, the rooms come equipped
with operating microscopes, used by Ear Institute doctors for
close examination and advanced evaluation of the ear, as well as
in-patient medical procedures, and sophisticated equipment
which allows for fiber optic imaging and documentation of the
ear nose and throat.

rights of disabled children. The conference received many positive reviews from participants.
Roof Top Cocktail Party a
Great Success
Dr. Patricia Chute, Dean, School of Health and Natural
Sciences at Mercy College, which generously hosted the conference, welcomed participants.
Almost
$50,000 was raised to benefit the Pediatric Hearing Aid Dispensary
at The Ear Institute of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
The Children’s Hearing Institute is grateful to all donors, and most
especially our Corporate sponsors: Doug Boxer of RARE,
Russian Standard Premium Vodka, PepsiCo New York, The
Abernathy McGregor Group, Melissa and Michael Boxer, Empire
Merchants, The Glazier Group, The Needlers Foundation, and
Weinberg Properties, all of whom ensured the financial success of
the evening.

CHI Summer Reading Champ
Congratulations are in order for Sam
Kaplan, entering the third grade this
year at Grafflin Elementary School in
Chappaqua, N.Y. who achieved his
goal of reading 100 hours this summer.
Sam, who has wears 2 cochlear
implants says his inspiration to
achieve his goal came from his 2nd
grade teacher, Mrs. Giacomi. Although
reading is essential for the educational
development of all children, substantial amounts of reading
help hearing impaired children in areas where they face challenges: vocabulary, higher level language acquisition, and
abstract thinking. Go Sam!

Sandra Delapenha,MA, Supervisor, Clinical Audiology, at The
Ear Institute is a specialist in performing both otoacoustic
emissions (OE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
in babies.
“We use both these tests in our treatment of all young children
that come to us for services, but they are particular valuable in
measuring and assessing hearing loss in infants.”
When receiving sounds, the normally functioning ear reflects an
“echo” back into the ear canal. In the otoacoustic emissions
test, a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the
child’s ear. Sounds are then played and the “echo” response, or
lack of response, to this sound is then measured and analyzed.
The auditory brainstem response measures the brain’s reaction
to sounds played to the infant’s ears. Small electrodes are
placed on the child’s head to detect these responses. This test
measures how the hearing nerve responds to sounds and can
identify hearing loss.
The ABR tests require a child to be sleeping to be accurate.
