Braces are in high demand. Nearly 1 million people in the UK
started orthodontic treatment last year and more adults than
ever before want treatment. Here are the answers to some
common questions about this type of dental treatment.
Q: Why have braces?
A: The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to make the best of your teeth. This includes allowing
you to bite correctly, eat more comfortably and care for your teeth and gums more easily. And
your smile will benefit too. Treatment almost always involves using braces to straighten crooked,
crowded or protruding teeth, close gaps between teeth and correct the bite of the teeth, so the
top and bottom teeth meet when you close your mouth. Treatment usually lasts from 18 months
to two years, with visits to the orthodontist required every four to six weeks.
Q: How common is orthodontic treatment?
A: Around one in three British children has crooked teeth and needs orthodontic treatment to
straighten them. Braces are usually more successful in children, and four out of five orthodontics
patients are children. But more adults than ever now want treatment, many having missed out
when they were children. According to the British Orthodontic Society (BOS), nearly 1
million people in the UK started orthodontic treatment last year.

and reliable”
Q: What’s the best age to have braces?
“being informed, treated
with respect”
Q: How do I get braces fitted?
“The payment plan
the openness and
comfort factor”
A: The ideal age to have orthodontic treatment is around 12 or 13, while you’re still growing.
Although in some cases, treatment starts from 9 onwards. With new technology, orthodontic
treatment for adults has also improved greatly.
A: To get braces fitted you need to be referred to an orthodontist by your dentist.
If you want to check the qualifications of your orthodontist, use the definitive list of specialist
orthodontists held by the General Dental Council. By law, only registered specialists can call
themselves a specialist orthodontist.
Q: What are braces like?
“That for the first time in 40
years I don't feel frightened
of the dentist or any of
the team.”
A: There are many different types of braces. Some are removable, which you take out at night,
to eat a meal or to clean them. Some are fixed and stay in all the time. Braces are made of
metal, but plastic and ceramic ones are also available. Some of these are clear, so you can
hardly see them on your teeth.

you at ease, good

Q: How successful are braces?
Orthodontics usually works very well, but it’s important to look after your teeth while you’re
wearing braces. Braces can trap food and cause more plaque to build up than usual. You need
to take extra care cleaning your teeth and watch what you eat, for example by avoiding sugary
foods and drinks. You also need to see your dentist regularly while having orthodontic
treatment.
What are my orthodontic treatment options?
Orthodontics has been
around
for a long time – it works by applying
pressure to your teeth over time, which
causes your teeth to move. Luckily though,
technology has improved the way
orthodontics is applied with some great
alternatives available. Orthodontics has
moved beyond the obvious metal braces
that you or your friends may have worn at
school and options like high-tech, invisible
aligners (pictured) are now available.
Adult Orthodontics
Many developments in today’s orthodontic
treatment have been focused on helping
adult patients. If your teeth are crooked,
orthodontic treatment at any age may be
just what you need to give you a smile you
can wear with confidence.
Invisalign
Invisalign is the breakthrough technology
that lets you have the smile you’ve always
wanted without the hassle of braces. By
using a series of clear, removable aligners
(shown in the photo), Invisalign straightens
your teeth with results you’ll notice sooner
than you think. The course of treatment
involves changing aligners approximately
every two weeks, moving your teeth into a
straighter position step-by-step, until you
have a more beautiful smile. And unlike
conventional braces, these clear aligners
can be removed while you eat and brush
your teeth as usual.

Conventional Braces
Recent improvements in traditional braces
have resulted in smaller, stronger, more
efficient and less conspicuous brackets.
Metal brackets are the most familiar;
however, clear and tooth-coloured ceramic
and plastic brackets are also available.
Braces are bonded brackets, arch wires
and elastic bands that move crowded or
spaced teeth into the proper position for
appearance and function. Over a period of
time, teeth will shift if constant, gentle
pressure is applied. Brackets are bonded to
the front surface of each tooth and wires
are attached to the brackets with elastic
bands. The slight tension on the wire is
gently transferred to the bracket through
the elastic band. Today’s orthodontic
treatment is faster, comfortable and more
fashionable than ever before for children,
teens and adults.

Incognito braces are an advanced
generation of brace that is hidden discreetly
on the back of the teeth, not on the front
like conventional 'train tacks'. This allows
people to go about their daily routine
without feeling self-conscious because their
braces are virtually invisible from the
outside. Incognito braces are suitable for all
age groups - children, adolescents and
adults who want to correct their tooth

each patient to maximise comfort and
ensure precise results, this is achieved by
