Commedia employs masks, satire, farce, slapstick, innuendo, naughtiness, and repetition to create plays from brief outline scenarios to which the actors improvise the dialogue and action. These are exaggerated stereotypes of human nature. In this play, included characters are: Il Dottore, the old (vecchi) “doctor”, a self-proclaimed astute expert on all things academia and every time he opens his mouth to prove it (which is all the time) he reveals that his knowledge of idiot trivia is emphasized on that first word. Pulcinella, revels in all things violent and corrupt. His mind is as twisted as his hunch-backed body. He enjoys hurting people for his own amusement and to get what he wants - yet he will claim innocence to any and all authority figures - and then as soon as their back is turned, kick them in the arse! Il Capitano, the “captain”, a boasting, bragging, self-proclaimed glorious hero in war and in love - hiding his true cowardly nature, his fragile bravado his only tool for obtaining acceptance and his desires. Sometimes the villain, conman, stooge, or a wannabe lover or hero of the people. Arlecchino, the constantly hungry, often dim-witted, and sometimes happy-go-lucky zany servant (second zanni) who will mess up any and every task given to him, often with physical pratfalls. He is, in name and behavior, the Harlequin of comedy. Doging the Debates was originally performed on February 5, 2008 as the headlining act of La Dolce Vita’s Carnivale Night.
