The Bugaboo Review:
A Lighthearted Guide to Exterminating
Confusion about Words, Spelling, and Grammar
By Sue Sommer
New Book Sheds Light on Word Confusion
and Grammar Pitfalls that Computers Don’t Catch
For years, high school English teacher Sue Sommer had self-published a photocopied
edition of The Bugaboo Review for her students. Filled with the most common pitfalls of
the English language and the hard-to-remember grammar rules and confusing words her
students continually stumble over, The Bugaboo Review (a.k.a. Bug-Rev as her students
call it) has become a legend among her students at the Marin School of the Arts at
Novato High School in California. Over the years, parents have requested copies, parents'
friends have requested copies, and past students have contacted her about how they
continue to turn to this valued reference as they continue their educational and work
lives. With the help of the cartoon characters “Bug” and “Boo,” Sommer lays out the
rules and troublesome words that spelling checkers, or even Google, won't catch in this
convenient, alphabetical reference.
With special sections on the parts of speech, words or rules she considers worst
offenders, and numerous sidebars on the most commonly misspelled and misused words,
Sommer gives students and the grammar-curious the tools they need to succeed, without
boring them with arcaneness or confusing them with jargon. Told with colorful examples
and artful mnemonics, readers will learn and remember that possessive nouns have
apostrophes but possessive pronouns do not. They'll learn prepositional agreements.
They'll learn how to correctly pronounce the most commonly mispronounced words.
They'll learn all the rules they need to succeed in school and life. The Bugaboo Review is
sure to become a beloved reference both for those who love grammar and those who
simply "know that they don't know."
Sue Sommer, an award-winning educator, teaches English Honors and Creative Writing,
a course she developed for Marin School of the Arts at Novato High School. Sommer
leads educational tours to Europe during summers, and won the Golden Bell Award for
excellence in teaching in 2004. She lives in Corte Madera, CA.
