DDD’s Ellipse IPL Technology Becomes
Increasingly Safe and Sophisticated
By Bob Kronemyer, Associate Editor
The Ellipse Flex PPT from Danish Dermatologic
Development A/S (DDD) (Horsholm, Denmark) is the
latest in a long line of Ellipse intense pulsed light (IPL)
devices for permanent hair removal, vascular lesions,
pigmented lesions, photorejuvenation and acne treatment. Currently, there are close to 2,000 Ellipse systems in operation in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and
the United States.
“In practice, the Ellipse allows me to use my medical training to treat patients who require the attention of a dermatologist,” said Peter Bjerring, M.D.,
medical director of the Private Hospital Molholm, the
second largest private hospital in
Denmark. “I normally interview
the patient and determine the
appropriate treatment. I can then
delegate routine treatment to a
specially trained nurse. This
enables me to spend more time
treating non-routine patients.”

fact that the Ellipse “comes with
settings that relate to medical
skills – diagnosis and observation – rather than engineering skills. The treatment parameters are determined by selecting medically meaningful reference

points, such as patient skin type, degree of suntan,
and vessel size. A set of starting treatment parameters
is automatically determined by the Ellipse. Because

and I are ensured that they are safe, and that they

The first Ellipse, Relax Light 1000, was launched
in 1997 and features dual mode filtering.

Wavelengths above 950 nm that only heat water in
the epidermis are removed, thus providing safer
treatments and a lower energy requirement. The
Ellipse Flex is also simple to operate, but offers
effective patient and treatment parameters. In
addition, the system has been clinically tested and
the results have been peer reviewed.
The second Ellipse, the Ellipse Light, introduced
in 2000, contains these same features, whereas the
Ellipse Light SPT from 2004 incorporates the additional component of square pulse technology.
According to DDD, this square pulse technology
resembles the closest to a perfect pulse outside a
physics laboratory. There is no pulse decay and no initial energy surge. Hence, it provides safe and more
effective treatment.
This year’s debut of the Ellipse Flex PPT marks the
first time an Ellipse system has a pulse definition
mode. This is a completely programmable pulse train
that allows researchers to develop better or new
treatments, and share these treatments with colleagues. The new system has the ability to connect
two applicators at the same time, and there is easy
switch between treatments. Furthermore, low maintenance intelligence software gives the provider a
warning of a need for water or maintenance before it
becomes critical.

May the Flex be with you
The new Ellipse Flex is taking physicians by storm.
With its breakthrough technology and remarkable

flexibility, it is quite possibly the most advanced
intense pulsed light system in the galaxy. Learn more
about it, you should. See www.ellipse.org

SAFE AND EFFECTIVE
In addition, the Ellipse Flex PPT allows an expert
mode or the fine tuning of the pulse, which is useful if
the target changes during the course of treatment, or if
the target does not fit within the standard (in-built) parameters. “The
Ellipse allows experienced users to
alter the treatment. This is important
because a little fine tuning is sometimes required. Some conditions
require the treatment parameters to
change during the course of the treatment, and of course some patients
have lesions that are non-standard.
While I prefer to make these parameter changes myself, I know that the
quality of the pulse and filter design
minimizes the risk,” said Dr. Bjerring.
Danish Dermatologic Development
A/S offers innovative and supportive
guidance to physicians. The company
also prides itself in following through
on its commitment that any equipment sale is the start of a partnership, not the end of
one. Moreover, the Ellipse systems are simple to use
for simple treatments, and a sophisticated second generation IPL device when more sophisticated treatments are desired.
First generation IPL systems filter out ultraviolet
light, but allow infrared light through. In contrast, the
Ellipse second generation systems have an extra filter
to remove the infrared light. This ensures that the

light directed to the skin contains only the wavelengths that are required to perform the treatment.
Therefore, treatment is more efficacious and safe
because less energy is used and cooling is not required.
Medical and beauty professionals worldwide have
embraced one or more of the Ellipse systems to treat a
wide range of skin conditions: hair removal (from any
part of the body), vascular lesions (removal or reduc-

tion of port-wine stains, thread veins and other vascular lesions), pigmented lesions (removal or reduction
of freckles, age spots and other pigmented lesions),
sun damaged skin (removal or reduction of age spots, visible blood vessels,
diffuse redness and uneven pigmentation while improving skin texture)
and acne (reduction of inflammatory
acne when used in combination with
a topical cream or gel).
Like all intense pulsed light treatments, Ellipse long-term hair
removal uses a technique called
selective photothermolysis. Visible
light produced by the Ellipse Flex
and Ellipse Light systems are carefully controlled to produce the correct
pulse length and energy level to
destroy the follicle. Similarly, for vascular lesions, the visible light produced by the Ellipse Flex system is
carefully controlled in pulse length
and energy to destroy the vessel.
“I like the new Ellipse PPT because it meets my academic requirements,” said Dr. Bjerring, who from 1995
to 2004 was a clinical research professor, holding a
chair in development of clinical laser systems (mainly
for dermatological treatments and diagnostic purposes) at the Laser Centre, Department of Dermatology,
University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark. “The programmable pulse of the Ellipse PPT allows me to try to
move the boundaries a little further, to improve on
existing treatments, and to research treatment of new
conditions. The ability to link quite different pulses in
a chain, to save and restore these pulses – and especially to share them with a research colleague who
may be in another country – means that research
becomes more organized and quicker.”
Dr. Bjerring is past president of the European
Society for Lasers in Dermatology (ESLD) and a member of the board of the European Society for Laser
Aesthetic Surgery (ESLAS). He is also a cofounder and
board member of the Scandinavian Society for Laser
Therapy and a fellow of the American Society for
Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.
