Choosing the Right Peel – Some Factors to Consider
Introducing Treatments
Client age: Younger than 20 years of age
Selective peel use
Light daily exfoliator
Only for the necessary cases such as
persistent oily blemished acneic skin and use
of the Salicylic light peel with minimum
application time
Generally not required every day unless
persistent problems as above
Client age: Up to 30 years of age
Lighter peel strength
Up to 30% Glycolic, 40% Lactic & 20%
1
Lighter daily exfoliator strength
Basic microdermabrasion
Salicylic
Up to 5% Glycolic, 10%Lactic & 2% Salicylic
Alpha Beta Cleanser and Microdermabrasion
Cream
Client age: 30 to about 45 years of age
Light-Medium strength peel
Lighter-Regular daily exfoliator
Microdermabrasion
up to 50% Glycolic, 50% Lactic & 30%
Salicylic
up to 10% Glycolic, 10% Lactic & 2%
Salicylic
All types
Client age: 45 years and over
Medium-Deep strength peel
Regular daily exfoliator strength
Microdermabrasion
to 70% Glycolic, 70% Lactic & 35% Salicylic
up to 10% Glycolic, 15% Lactic & 5%
Salicylic
All Types including Glycolic 10%
Microdermabrasion Cream.
Of course...If your patient fits into an above category you must also consider
other factors including:
Skin Type: For example, sensitive skin should always be directed toward the
lightest strength products to determine their tolerance to acids. Application time
for sensitive skin should be kept to minimum until tolerance increases and no
redness or irritation occurs.
Previous Product Usage: For example, a 28 year old female with current usage
of Glycolic and tolerance to light strength, may be treated with slightly stronger
product and/or peel application maybe increased.

PRODUCT PERCENTAGE- AN UNEVEN LANGUAGE
%?
WHAT TO LEARN FROM THE ABOVE CHARTS
When considering acid products often comparing percentages can be
misunderstood.
Comparing Salicylic to Glycolic Acid (figure 1) for peel strength or depth shows
that Salicylic is much stronger than Glycolic of a similar percentage.
Glycolic 30% tolerance does not translate to Salicylic 35% tolerance. Lactic
compared to Glycolic (figure 2) shows that Lactic is generally weaker in strength
than comparable percentage Glycolic.
However, the gap difference between Glycolic and Lactic is smaller than
comparing to Salicylic Acid.

SALICYLIC PEEL
BETA HYDROXY ACID PEEL
Salicylic Acid Products: LIGHT PEEL
- 10% & 20%
MEDIUM PEEL
- 20% & 30%
DEEP PEEL
- 30% & 35%
DAILY EXFOLIATOR*
- 2% & 5%
(*pre-peel prep & take home daily exfoliator strengths)
FORMULATION: Salicylic Acid, a Beta-Hydroxy Acid, is a highly effective
superficial peeling agent, oil reducer and pore cleanser. Oil-soluble and lipophilic,
Salicylic penetrates sebum filled follicles and cleans out clogged pores, resulting
in marked improvement in especially acne prone skin. Ingredients: Distilled
Water, Salicylic Acid, Alcohol Denatured*.
APPLICATION: With Salicylic Acid, you can
deeply cleanse and clear the pores, balance oil
production, and train even the most blemished
skin to behave like healthy, normal, blemishfree skin.
Daily treatments result in marked, if not total,
improvement in skin’s appearance, and help to
achieve a continuous blemish-free appearance.
General Directions: Always refer to Peel Instruction Manual. As Glycolic
instructions, although initially, rinse with neutralizing solution or water after 30
seconds. Pell can be left on for longer periods as tolerance increases.
RESULTS: Dr. Albert Kliginan, professor emeritus of dermatology at the
University of Pennsylvania, School of Medicine:
"Salicylic acid is effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines
4
and wrinkles, and improving overall facial texture because it exfoliates
both the skin surface and within pores, without all the irritation
commonly associated with the alpha hydroxy, glycolic acid."
PATIENT EXPLANATION
Salicylic Acid, a Beta-Hydroxy Acid, is an excellent
deep cleanser. It dissolves oil and is able to
penetrate and clean out clogged pores. This
diminishes blackheads and pimples and prevents
new ones from forming.
Salicylic Acid also works by exfoliating (removing)
aging cells, dirt and debris attached to the skin
surface. By removing the superficial aging cells, new
cell growth is stimulated resulting in younger,
healthier cells appearing on the surface.
This amazing 3-4 minute procedure results in a
remarkable rejuvenating effect. The skin will
immediately feel smoother, softer and more evenly
pigmented. Fine wrinkles, large pores and even acne
scars will be less noticeable. You will notice
increased improvement with each additional peel.
The Salicylic Acid Peel is superior in many aspects to traditional superficial
chemical peels as it does not damage the skin. Although it can be used on its
own, Salicylic Acid is ideal for use before a Glycolic Acid Peel because it
prepares the skin to receive the maximum benefit from Glycolic Acid.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
1. Review with patient their skin type, age, previous product usage and if
necessary consider performing a patch test to skin for sensitivity.
2. Gently wash face with Green Tea, Glycolic or Lactic C Cleanser, rinse with
water and pat dry. For improved peel acid absorption try using Alpha Beta
Microdermabrasion Cleanser to buff the skin, deeply remove dirt and oil
and open pores.
3. Shake Salicylic Acid well. Wipe away and discard any crystallised Salicylic
Acid that may be clinging to the bottle opening.
4. Apply 1-2 ml Salicylic Acid to a gauze pad and apply to the face using a
mild rubbing action. Avoid eye areas, lips, and insides of nostrils. Continue
buffing until frosting of the skin appears. (Note: if no frosting appears than
a higher concentration of Salicylic Acid may be appropriate).
5
5. Leave on initially for 30 – 60 seconds, building up to 2-3 minutes as
patient tolerance increases. (You may fan the skin at this stage to alleviate
discomfort).
6. After reaching the desired time wash off with cold water. (Note: Should
redness or excessive stinging occur, wash off immediately. Pat dry with a
clean cotton or paper towel. Do not rub skin with the towel.)
7. Apply REPLENISH HYAULRONIC MOISTURIZER to soothe and nourish
skin. At this stage you may wish to apply Glycolic Acid Peel as part of an
Alpha Beta Peel Treatment.

GETTING STARTED IN YOUR OFFICE
6
The best way to get started is to CALL US. All professionals use the Glycolic
treatments and send their patients home with low-strength Daily Exfoliators to
maintain and improve results - and of course remind the patient to return for their
next peel treatment.
PATIENT EXPLANATION
Phase two involves Buffered Glycolic Acid, otherwise
known as Alpha-Hydroxy Acid or Fruit Acid.
It is naturally found in grapes, apples and sugar cane.
Glycolic Acid is one of the most effective exfoliation
agents known
Glycolic Acid improves dry skin, diminishes age spots,
reduces oil and acne and decreases fine lines and
wrinkles.
Glycolic Acid works by removing the outer layers of
thickened or damaged skin, leaving a smoother and
healthier appearance.
Glycolic Acid is capable of penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin and
increasing the rate of dead cell shedding, new skin cell production and collagen
formation.
3. Apply 1-2 ml Glycolic Acid to a gauze pad and apply to the face using a
mild rubbing action. Avoid eye areas, lips, and insides of nostrils. (Note: if
no frosting appears than a higher concentration of Salicylic Acid may be
appropriate).
4. Leave on initially for 30 – 60 seconds, building up to 2-3 minutes or more
as patient tolerance increases. (You may fan the skin at this stage to
alleviate discomfort).
5. After reaching the desired time wash off with cold water. NOTE: Should
redness or excessive stinging occur, wash off immediately. Pat dry with a
clean cotton or paper towel. Do not rub skin with the towel.
7
6. Apply REPLENISH HYAULRONIC MOISTURIZER to soothe and nourish
skin. Use GREEN TEA SPF30+ for anti-aging and UVA & UVB protection
as skin is more sensitive to sunlight after performing peel and exfoliation
treatments.
Glycolic Acid will penetrate more effectively through a clean and exfoliated
surface and therefore it is ideal to apply Glycolic Acid after a Salicylic Acid
Peel.
LACTIC PEEL
ALPHA HYDROXY ACID PEEL
Lactic Acid Products:
LIGHT PEEL 20% & 30%
MEDIUM PEEL 40% & 50%
DEEP PEEL 60% & 70%
DAILY EXFOLIATOR* - 2% 5% & 10%
(*pre-peel prep & take home daily exfoliator strengths)
FORMULATION: High efficacy Lactic Acid and Sodium Lactate in a Natural
Clear Gel Base; pH 2.2 (non-buffered product available upon request); and Over
2 year shelf life and odor free. Ingredients: Distilled Water, Lactic Acid, Sodium
Lactate, Cellulose Gum, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.
APPLICATION: Lactic Acid, an Alpha Hydroxy, carries many of the same
properties as Glycolic Acids yet is less harsh and more moisturizing than Glycolic
Acid skin peels. Recommended for those that are new to peel and exfoliating
agents.
General Directions: Always refer to Peel Instruction Manual. Simply apply to
gauze pad and buff skin. Rinse with neutralizing solution or water after 2-3
minutes.
Can be left on for longer periods as tolerance increases and a deeper peel are
desired. Can be used in conjunction with other skin care treatments such as
Retin-A and Salicylic Peels. FDA highly recommends the use of sunscreen after
Glycolic treatments.
RESULTS: Similar to Glycolic a series of peel treatments when properly applied
will achieve noticeable skin rejuvenation improvement for most patients and Daily
Exfoliation will maintain and improve results. Combining the in-office peel
treatment with take-home daily exfoliator and moisturizer maintenance products
is vital to ensure best peel results and recurring in-office visits.
8
PATIENT EXPLANATION
Lactic Acid is a non-irritating rapid exfoliator. Lactic Acid is
recommended for those that are new to peel and exfoliating
agents in skin care products, as well as those that have
used other exfoliators for a long period and want to improve
results.
Lactic is one of the Alpha Hydroxy acids (fruit acids). Fruit
acids are nontoxic naturally occurring substances, and are
found in a variety of fruits, such as grapes, apples and
sugar cane. Other fruit acids are Citric, Malic, Glycolic and
Pyruvic Acids.
Lactic Acid is a thorough exfoliator, removing the outer
layers of thickened or damaged skin leaving a smoother
and healthier appearance.
Lactic Acid can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, increasing the rate of
dead cell shedding, new skin cell production and collagen formation.
With prolonged use, Lactic Acid has been found to be beneficial in improving
reducing hyperpigmentation, dry skin, treating age spots, improving oily and acne
prone skin and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles.

POST PEEL CARE
SALICYLIC, LACTIC & GLYCOLIC
Immediately after the peel the skin may be red and blotchy, slightly raised, tight
and shiny, and/or feel sensitive. These are all normal reactions to the peel, and
symptoms should subside in a few hours or within 1-2 days in some cases.
CAUTION: During this time, when skin is red and/or sensitive following a peel
care should be taken not to pick or irritate the skin. A small number of patients
may experience an initial reaction to glycolic acid, in the form of small blemishes,
irritation or redness. This is a normal reaction, and should subside in a few days
upon which treatment may be resumed.
Post Peel Moisturization should involve application of Hyaluronic Replenish
Serum which is specifically formulated not to cause irritation to exfoliated and
peeled skin.
Other moisturizers that can help soothe the skin and will not cause reactions
include Hyaluronic Marine Peptide (especially for oily skin) and Squalane Oil
(most suitable for drier skin types).
In the week following the peel, the patient may experience mild flaking and/or
redness, similar to a slight sunburn in some areas. The patient should apply
Puramed Moisturizers as set out above and not use any irritants or exfoliators.
Following a peel, patients should also take care to wash and dry their skin gently.
The patient should avoid the sun and apply a non-irritating sunscreen, such as
PURAMED Green Tea Aging SPF30 and UVA UVB sun block, when outdoors.
Patients generally may resume their home skin care routine 2 to 3 days after the
office treatment, provided there is no residual redness.
For Best Results patients should return for peel treatments every 2-3 weeks.
