Medicines for Parasitic Infection (head lice, scabies etc) Generic name (active ingredient) Common side effects Dosage Special precautions Legal status Avoid contact with eyes, nose, ears, mouth or vagina Over the counter (OTC) Over the Counter Medicine Malathion 0.5% Scabies: To be applied at bedtime and wash off after 24hours. Repeat the second application 1 week later if no improvement. • • • Stinging of skin local irritation such as redness, itching of the skin Rash Head lice: Do not smoke or use electrical heat sources when on malathion. Apply to dry hair until the hair and scalp are wet. Leave it on for 12hours. Second application recommended only if live lice are still present 7-9 days after treatment Crotamiton 10% (cream/lotion) Scabies: Apply a thin layer to the body from neck down to toe. Rub it in well. Leave it for 24hours, then without washing, apply a second dose. Thoroughly wash off the medication 48hours after the last application Benzyl benzoate application BP Scabies: Apply to whole body except head and neck; repeat without bathing on the following day and wash off 24 hours later. Not recommended for children below 6 months old - Itching, burning, stinging of the skin - Rash - Redness - Avoid contact with eyes, nose or mouth. - Burning or itching of skin - redding or scaling of skin - Blister formation - Avoid contact with eyes, nose, ears, mouth or vagina - Do not apply to open wounds or cuts - Do not use in patient with infected skin 23 March 2012 Over the counter (OTC) Over the counter (OTC)
