2005 - 2008 Master in Cellular Biology at the University of Coimbra.
Thesis: “Yeast infections in Portugal. Characterization of the risk
groups and identification of the main infection sites and agents.”
•
2000 – 2005 Graduation in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science
and Technology of the University of Coimbra, with grade point
average 15.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING

and plant multiple dynamic equilibrium in response to heavy metal
pandemonium”

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
•
2005 – 2006 Fellowship in the PYM - Pathogenic Yeast Media
project, funded by “Agência da Inovação”, at the Institute of
Microbiology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra.
o
Identification of yeasts and filamentous fungi using Molecular
Biology methods (RFLP, Sequencing)
o
Assembly of a culture collection of pathogenic yeasts, which
were used in the validation of a chromogenic media kit for
rapid identification of Candida species
o
The epidemiologic study of yeast infections in the district of
Coimbra, as well as the existing identification methods were
the object of my Masters dissertation.
o
In the same Institute, I was also developing an heterelogous
expression model of an HIV-1 protein in Saccharomyces
cerevisae, with the final goal of developing a kit which will
predict the probability of disease progression in small children
infected with the virus.
•
2004 – 2005 the last year of the Biochemistry course, I had a
practical training at the Laboratory of Microbiology of the “Instituto
do Ambiente e da Vida” of the University of Coimbra.
o
Development and maintenance of a lab-scale activated sludge
reactor for the assessment of the Bioremediating ability of
Chromium contaminated wastewater by a newly isolated
Cr(VI)-resistant and –reducing strain. The other goals were to
study
the
toxicity
of
Cr(VI)
and
later
the
effects
of
bioaugmentation with the strain on the sludge’s microbial
populations.
o
Continuation of a work already in progress, evaluating the
biological impact of the fertilization of soils with activated
sludge.

o
Collaboration in the description of the new bacterial specie
Leucobacter luti
