Its core ® technology—Triosyn resin—is an iodinated polymer that interacts with and devitalizes microorganisms through an ionic demand-release mechanism that is sensitive to their presence and concentration. • • • ® Triosyn is effective against bacterial spores, viruses, protozoa, algae and fungi. Pure iodine crystal is thermally fused with a specialized polymer via a proprietary manufacturing process patented by the Corporation. ® Triosyn is safe to humans and the environment because it releases iodine only in the presence of demand-causing microorganisms and only in amounts required to eliminate the source of the demand. TRIOSYN® AIR FILTRATION COMPOSITE ® Triosyn interactive polymer can be impregnated in a low pressure drop membrane, without increasing its resistance to air. In contrast, high efficiency particulate filters (HEPA) create significant pressure drop across the filter membrane, requiring a pump to move air through the membrane. Research has shown ® that Triosyn technology enables low pressure drop membranes to outperform HEPA filter materials in virucidal protection (see Table 1), with only a fraction of the pressure drop. The single ® mono-layer Triosyn composite forces harmful microorganisms, including viruses, to come into contact with the biocidal resin. This technology has applications for collective protection in NBC warfare. COLLECTIVE PROTECTION APPLICATIONS ® Triosyn filter composite technology has many potential applications in the realm of collective protection. The tent as shown previously is a protective enclosure that guards against biological, chemical, and nuclear attacks. The tent is primarily composed of non-permeable material, with 2 approximately 1 m of highly breathable Triosynated filter composite. As the pressure drop is extremely low, no external power source is needed; the action of the occupants’ breathing is enough to pull air through the filter. The Triosyn composite media provides through the integration of a treated particulate filtration by mechanical and electrostatic technology, biocidal protection with the Triosyn polymer and chemical warfare protection with chemically treated carbon. ® The Triosyn composite’s ability to function without an external power source readily aligns it with applications where power is too costly or there is a risk of occasional failure. Possible applications include emergency and portable protection scenarios, such as: • • • • • Ground troop movements. Armored vehicles. Military operations. No requirement for energy permits a lightweight, portable enclosure that is quick and easy to set up. Low cost, comparable to existing bioprotective enclosures, allows widespread deployment for better protection against possible attack.
