One month training program for Japanese medial residents of Nagasaki
University in San Lazaro Hospital in the Philippines
(Goal)
To be a specialist of infection disease in the future, residents have to study
the basic knowledge and skills through the various cases that cannot be
seen in Japan. However tropical infectious diseases such as Dengue fever,
Typhoid fever are rarely observed and difficult to see the cases in developed
countries. Also, they have to learn the difference between Japan and
Philippines such as history, weather ,health care system, thinking…,etc.
This clinical training course can provide great opportunities to learn
tropical infectious diseases and health care system in Philippines to
medical residents in Japan
(About San Lazaro Hospital)
San Lazaro Hospital, is an urban 500-bed hospital serving as the national
referral center in the Philippines for infectious diseases. This is one of the
largest hospital in the world treating tropical infectious disease.
(Method)
Through this extensive course including text book learning, clinical bedside
trainings and English discussion with local doctors, the Japanese residents
can learn the pathogenesis of common pathogen, the clinical managements
and basic skill of treating the patients
Knowledge
Before going to the Philippines, Residents have to learn basic knowledge of
common infectious diseases (Dengue fever, Rabies, Tetanus, Leptospirosis,
Typhoid fever and TB/HIV). Textbook recommendation “Lecture note:
Tropical Medicine 7th edition”
Residents should take two month training in the department of Clinical
Medicine, Institute of Tropical Medicine for learning basic infectious
diseases.

In Philippines, Residents have to do
1: Daily ward with local doctors every day. Daily discussion in English must
be done.
2: Formal case presentation in English should be done in the general
meeting in San Lazaro Hospital
3: Residents also should join the SLH-Nagasaki research team and learn
clinical research and some basic laboratory skills
4: should write the condition and managements of the patients in medical
chart in English
Skill
1: Give a formal presentation in English
2: Discuss about the clinical cases in English
3: Perform clinical research and basic laboratory works (PCR, bacterial
identification, serology tests) with SLH-Nagasaki research team
4: Write daily medical chart in English
( Weekly Schedule)
Every morning 8:00 am ~ 10:00am
Monday: weekly ground round with senior local staff
Tuesday: Attend the general meeting in San Lazaro Hospital
Wednesday: Case discussion with senior doctors
Thursday: Journal club
Friday: Laboratory work
(Evaluation)
Residents have to
1: write a report that they learn and submit Dr. Saito and Prof. Hamada.
2:give a presentation for Japanese residents
They will be evaluated by their repot and presentation.
