Using sterile technique, a radiologist introduces a small needle into the dialysis graft/fistula just below the skin surface. Following the placement of the needle, pictures are taken while injecting contrast material through the needle and into the arteriovenous system. This injection allows for the complete evaluation of the involved structures. Once the initial evaluation is complete, the radiologist may decide that some area/s may need to be fixed in order to improve or restore the functionality of the dialysis access. This may include using various catheters, wires, and small balloons in order to open the vessels within the arteriovenous system. It is during this time that local anesthetic and in some cases mild sedation may be given under the direction of the performing physician in order to keep the patient comfortable. For many dialysis patients the shuntogram is a common procedure that is used to evaluate and maintain the dialysis access. In normal circumstances, once the shuntogram has been complete, the involved dialysis access sight may be used immediately for dialysis. If sedation had been given for the procedure the patient may need to stay for short-term observation in order to ensure it is safe for the patient to leave the facility. This exam will take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Ask your physician for all preps prior to your exam. Enter the hospital using the South Entrance. A map with further instruction is attached.
