Deluxe Delay datasheet version 27/06/16 www.op-electronics.com The Deluxe Delay is a replica of Memory Man and Memory Man Deluxe (TM) delays. It can be built with MN3005, MN3205 or V3205. The Deluxe Delay features 6 pot controls and 1 toggle switch: DELAY: sets the delay time SPEED: sets the modulation frequency of the lfo DEPTH: sets the modulation amplitude of the lfo VIBRATO/CHORUS: This is a 3-positions switch, it sets between two types of lfo waveforms for modulation section. When centered the modulation is off. LEVEL: output level of the effect MIX: mix between dry guitar signal and wet guitar signal FEEDBACK: sets the number of delay repeats There are 3 LEDs which indicates: RED: bypass status ORANGE: input signal level BLUE: modulation frequency General assembly guidelines Types of bbd chips: MN3205 and V3205 are just the same chip that come from different manufacturers, they share same characteristics, you can swap one with the other in the same circuit without problem. For simplicity we'll refer to V3205 in the datasheet but same rules are valid for MN3205 too. MN3005 is a different beast, it has different supply requirements than V3205 and MN3205. All the 3 chips have the same delay time. R21, CR14, R11 and R12 V3205 version uses 100K resistor in R21 and CR14 and 47K resistors in R11 and R12. MN3005 uses i 1K in R21, 33n cap in CR14 and 68K in R11 and R12 Jumpers There are 3 jumpers on board to be set, they route the appropriate supply lines to the bbd chips. For V3205 connect T pad with VGG pad, P pad with GND pad and VD pad with S pad: For MN3005 connect them as follows: V3205 Supply V3205 version uses a standard 9V DC external power supply. The 8V2 zener is there to give the appropriate voltage for the V3205 chips, if you use a regulated PSU with 9V DC a 0.5W zener is fine but for unregulated PSU where output voltage is more than 9V DC a 1.3W is suggested. MN3005 Supply ... Setting the trimmers Once finished soldering all the components and powered the effect you have to set trimmers. You don't need a voltmeter for the purpose. Once powered the effect for the first time, depending on trimmers and pots position, you may not hear any effect at all or hear distorted delayed signal. To start set all the pots this way: DELAY: max position MODULATION switch: center (off) LEVEL: mid positions MIX: mid positions FEEDBACK: mid position Start to set bias trimmers first BIAS1 and BIAS2, if you have an oscilloscope, an audio probe or multimeter may be helpful. If you don't have a scope or probe you have to regulate them until you hear the delayed signal coming out from speakers, the ideal positions being these: If you have a scope, probe or multimeter at hand: BIAS1: biases IC4 input, regulate until you see/hear signal from IC4 pin 3 or 4. Measure voltage on pin7 IC4 and sets it in between 5.5V and 7V BIAS2: biases IC5 input, regulate until you see/hear signal from IC5 pin 3 or 4. Measure voltage on pin7 IC5 and sets it in between 5.5V and 7V GAIN1: sets the amount of feedback and repeats, turn FDBK pot all way up and adjust GAIN1 until you can get the most repeats number without exaggerate oscillation. Essentially you can set it at your own taste, if you like the idea of massive amounts of feedback when pot is up or is an undesirable effect for you. Always check that with FDBK pot down you have one single repeat only. GAIN2: sets the output level with mix level. BAL: helps cancel clock noise. Sets DELAY pot to max then while playing regulate the BAL trimmer to find a spot where less clock noise is audible. Delay time mod Delay time is 450ms with C41=220p, by replacing 220p with 330p delay times of up to 600ms can be achieved. BAL trimmer may need to be set once again. Modulation LED blinking fix Put a 4.7K resistor in parallel to modulation LED.
