Unipolar/Bipolar L/R Drive Manual
Model 39105
Introduction
This type of drive is also referred to as a constant voltage drive. Many of these drives can be
configured to run bipolar or unipolar stepper motors. L/R stands for the electrical relationship of inductance
(L) to resistance (R). Motor coil impedance vs, step rate is determined by these parameters. The L/R
drive should “match” the power supply output voltage to the motor coil voltage rating for continuous duty
operation. Most published motor performance curves are based on full rated voltage applied at the motor
leads. Power supply output voltage level must be set high enough to account for electrical drops within the
drive circuitry for optimum continuous operation.

Power Supply Connections
1. Connect he “Positive” (+) lead to the edge connector T2-16 or T2-17 or both.
2. Connect the “Negative” (-) lead to the edge connector T2-3 or T2-10 or both.
3. This supply powers the motor and electronics via a 5 volt regulator.
Unipolar Operations
-This drive is intended to operate a low power unipolar stepping motor.
-The 5 or 6 lead wires from the motor can be connected to terminals T1-1 thru T1-6 or
edge connector T2-11 thru T2-15. (See the “connector pin allocation” for the correct
wiring sequence).
-See the “switch settings” to obtain the desired mode of operation.
Bipolar Operations
-This drive is intended to operate a low power bipolar stepping motor.
-The 4 lead wires from the motor can be connected to terminals T3-1 thru T3-4 or edge
connector T2-6 thru T2-9. (See the “connector pin allocation” for the correct wiring
sequence).
Full step (2 phase on) mode must be selected.

External I/O Control
External clock: An external clock or pulse source can be substituted for the on-board
oscillator as follows:
1. Open jumper J1.
2 Connect an external oscillator to T2-4.
3. Signal amplitude must remain within the limits of 0 to + 5V.
External Direction Control:
1. Turn the on-board direction switch (S1-4) to the OFF position.
2. Connect external direction control to T2-5.
3. Signal amplitude must remain within the limits of 0 to +5V.

External I/O Control con’t
External Enable Control:
1. Turn the on-board enable switch (SW1-3) to the OFF position.
2. Connect external enable control to T2-18.
3. Signal amplitude must remain within the limits of 0 to +5V.
External Step Rate Control: Provisions have been made to control the on-board oscillator with
an external fixed or variable resistor.
1. Remove resistor R2 to disable the on-board potentiometer P1.
2. Connect a fixed or variable resistor between terminals T2-1 and T2-2.
3. The step rate can be changed by varying the value of the external
resistance as specified on 555 timer data sheets.
Step Rate Adjustment: The step rate can be varied between 10 step/sec and 2000 steps/sec by
adjusting the on board potentiometer P1.
