Improved data transfer, diagnosis
via optimised bus termination.
Permanent monitoring of the message quality,
display of critical states by LED “traffic lights”.
AS-i tuner: Active bus termination with
teach-in phase for adaptation to AS-i networks.
Protection rating IP 67 for direct installation
in the field at the end of the AS-i cable.
Use in conjunction with repeaters
possible, overall length up to 750 m.
Easy mounting with flat or
round cable lower part.
Introduction
The communication of an AS-i network can be considerably improved by the connection of a suitable terminating
resistor. It is composed of an inductor, resistor and capacitor.
This leads to the effect that an AS-i network can be operated with a cable length of up to 100 m. As flexible tree,
ring, star and line topologies are possible with AS-i, there
are no clear rules as regards the possible cable length.
Empirical measurements with different arrangements have
shown that up to 250 m are possible in many networks.
To ensure optimum effect, the AS-i tuner is mounted at
the end of the AS-i cable which is furthest away from the
AS-i power supply. The AS-i tuner has a microprocessor
which performs a quality assessment of the AS-i network
setting the impedance at one press of the button.

Typical applications:
• Use at the end of a cable if more than 100 metres
of AS-i cable are to be used
• In nested arrangements mounting furthest away
from the AS-i power supply
• For increased safety with respect to interference in
Safety at Work applications
• If incorrect messages occur frequently and the
cause cannot be identified
• Extension of the AS-i cable with repeaters to up to
750 metres between two slaves
Networking and control

increased safety, longer cable.

Advantages and customer’s benefits.
• Basic function of the AS-i tuner
The AS-i tuner is based on the tried and tested EMS
ClassicLine family. Both flat or round cable lower parts
can still be used. The AS-i voltage is in addition on an
M12 socket. Tuning is not made automatically but is
started by means of the teach-in button. By this process
the bus termination impedance is changed until AS-i
communication has reached its optimum. This may be
useful with Safety at Work applications, with bus cable
lengths of more than 100 m or with the use of screened
bus cables.
• Bus diagnosis using the AS-i tuner
The AS-i tuner incorporates bus diagnosis with a qualitative display of the communication and is thus particularly suited for difficult conditions and for service use.
The three LEDs operate to the “traffic lights” principle
(red/yellow/green) and symbolise the excess gain of the
data exchange. When the TUNE button has been pressed,
the quality should improve so that only the green LED is
lit.
• Extension of the cable using repeaters
Considerably greater distances can be bridged using AS-i
repeaters and the tuner. The length is extended by up to
200 m instead of the 100 m possible as compared to the
classical AS-i wiring (see drawing below). At any rate a
bus diagnosis to determine the message quality should
be made before and after mounting of the tuner.
