Mythology Research Paper
Choose a Greek god or goddess from Heroes, Gods and Monsters of Greek Myths by
Bernard Evslin: Zeus, Hera, Athene, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Apollo, Artemis,
Hermes, Hephaestus, or Aphrodite. Read the chapter corresponding to the deity you
choose and take notes. Use this information as a starting point for your research
assignment. You will take notes on basic information about your character and develop at
least three research questions for further study. You will also need to cite this source in
your bibliography or works cited page.
Look for the following Information:
Who is your character?
Origin of birth (how they were born, parents, etc.)
What does he or she look like?
What is he or she famous for?
What is their area or domain of influence (god of fire, goddess of love, etc.)
What are their qualities, strengths, or talents? (a particular power, can change forms,
etc.)
What personality traits or flaws do they have? (jealous, fall in love with everyone,
greedy, etc.)
Which god in another culture do they resemble? For example, Ares is the god of war
in Greek Mythology and Odin is the god of war in Norse mythology. While they both
have a tendency to be selfish, Odin is wise whereas Ares is often considered to be
immature.
How is their influence still seen today? For example, Venus is the Roman name for
Aphrodite. The Venus razor is marketed towards women in a way that makes them
believe they will be as beautiful as the goddess of love herself if they use this product.
Look on page 204 in Heroes, Gods and Monsters of Greek Myths for more ideas.
Summarize one myth that features this character. (This should not be more than one
paragraph) How is he or she portrayed in this story? (faults, flaws, attributes, etc.)
Include a picture of your character. Computer generated or hand drawn.
Research Requirements:
You will access at least three different sources. (Find the best ones! Don't just use the
first ones you come to.)
You will keep accurate and complete source information for all sources you use in your
research.
You should keep notes on what you learn. (This does not mean printing every web site
you look at!)
These resources will help you to draft your research paper. You will be graded
periodically on the progress you are making.
Research Questions, notes, source information, and drafts will all receive grades before
your final paper is submitted.
Once your research is complete, you will take the information and write a two-page
report incorporating the above information.
• Make sure (as you research) you write down all of your sources (including websites).
You will be responsible for citing your sources with an attached bibliography.
In addition to your written report you will prepare a short (2-3 minute) presentation for
the class. You will summarize your findings. Your presentation should include a visual
aid. Be creative.
