Asalamualaikum dan salam sejahtera
Sepanyol 1 Belanda 0. Itulah keputusan pertandingan akhir
perlawanan bola sepak Piala Dunia Afrika Selatan 2010. Sepanyol
meneka keputusan perlawanan, kebarangkalian Paul, bomoh sotong
betul kesemua tujuh tekaannya ialah
0.5X0.5X0.5X0.5X0.5X0.5X0.5=0.0078125
Suatu kebarangkalian yang kecil. Menurut tafsiran kebarangkalian,
ramalannya hanyalah ‘Satu kebetulan’.
Apa pendapat saudara saudari?

New Semester, New Student…
Semester 1 2010/2011 has just started. This semester I am teaching
Statistics subject to the first year SSM and SSE students. My first meeting
with them was focussed on the POs and COs as listed in the L1 of the
program. I also stressed on the generic skills to be assessed plus the
rubrics that are going to be used in the assessment. I guess every lecturers
have had their first meeting with their respective students . Besides the
introductory to the course and the L1, the first meeting would be occupied
by “Taaruf” session and series of advices. It was also reported that the first
meeting imprints 70% of the impression that one has of a person on his
mind. Thus one should treat a person as if it is the first and last time he will
ever meet him. The Prophet SAW would also capture people‟s hearts the
first time he met them. It was narrated that after the conquest of Makkah
and when Islam had become dominant, the Prophet SAW started to receive
envoys from various tribes. One of the envoys was from „Abd al-Qays‟.
When they arrived, before they could even mount from their rides, the
Prophet SAW said to them “Welcome, O people! May you never face
disgrace or sorrow so have glad tiding!”. As they dismounted from their
camels, they raced to the Prophet SAW to greet him. They said, “O
Messenger of Allah, between our cities there lies a dwelling of a group of
pagans from Mudhar, due to which we cannot come to you except in the
scared months, since this is when Arabs do not fight, so guide us to the best
thing we can do, which if we were to do it, would cause us to enter
paradise, and which we would instruct others to do also. The Prophet SAW
said, “I shall order you to do four things and forbid you from four: I order
you to have faith in Allah. Do you know what it means to have faith in
Allah?”. They replied, “ Allah and His Messenger know best”. The Prophet
SAW said, “It means to testify that there is no one worthy of worship
except Allah, to establish the prayers, to give in charity, and to give a fifth
of the war booty in charity. I also forbid you from four; from drinking fron
ad-Dubba, an-Naqir (pitched water skins), az-Zuruf, al-Muzaffat and alHantam (names of utensils used for the preparation of alcoholic drinks)”.
(al-Bukhari). In another story, a man came to the Prohet SAW asking him
for material aid. The Prophet SAW gave him a portion of his cattle. The
man returned to his people and said, “Accept Islam, for Muhammad gives
like a man who doesn‟t fear poverty!”. Anas R.A said, “The man would
come to the Prophet SAW solely for worldly reasons, but afterwards his
religion became more precious to him than the whole world and all that
exists there in” (Muslim). Hence, the first meeting with our students
would be the initial step to enhance their spirit to love the course and to
prepare them to work hard to achieve good grades.
One of the things I found hard when dealing with new students since age is
catching up is remembering their names. If we remember the name of the
persons in front of us, that show we have concern for them. There is a
difference between a teacher who remembers the names of his students and
the one who does not. For us to say to a student, “Could you solve this on
the board, Ali” is better than to say, “Could you solve this on the board,
(pointing to a student)”. According to Areefi, Muhammad (2008) there are
many reasons why some people cannot recall others‟ names. One of them is
lack of concern for people while meeting them. Second is that their minds
are preoccupied while meeting and asking others‟their names. Third is their
own attitude towards the person they are meeting. He suggested several
ways to overcome this problem. One is to realise the importance of
remembering people‟s names, and to feel that once you have heard his
names, you would asked to repeat them after a few minutes. Another way
is to focus on a person‟s face while listening to his name. Try to make note
of the person in front of you, how he talks and smiles, such that it leaves an
impression in your memory.
In the Quran we would find Allah the Mighty and Majestic refers to His
Prophets by their names:
“O Abraham! Turn away from them…”
“O Noah! He is not from your family”
“O David! We have made you a deputy on this earth”
Therefore, inorder to show your concern on your students, do remember
their names and address them by their names in all occasions.
Many of us have been appointed as PAs for the new students. PA plays
important roles while the students are here in UTM. PA becomes their
councellor, advisor, sister/brother or mother/father.
Through
experience, only the problematic students would come to us for advise
whilethe others would only come to get our signatures. I normally
would have difficulties in deciding how to give advice to the students
who have problems especially regarding their attitudes. According to
Areefi, Muhammad (2008), the righteous people always mentions the
good points first and then brings his attention to the faults, in order to be
balanced in his approach. Always try to give the impression that we
have positive view of him. When we caution him over his errors, this
does not mean we are belittling him, or that we have forgotten his good
deeds. We must always make him realize that our criticisms of him are
insignificant in comparison to his good deeds. The Prophet SAW on
one occasion went to some of the Arab tribes calling them to Islam. He
would choose the most beautiful words to encourage them to respond to
his call and enter the fold of Islam. One of the tribes he went to was
known as Banu Abdullah. When the Prophet SAW called them to Allah
and presented his massage to them, he said, “O Banu Abdullah! Allah
has chosen a beautiful name for your father!”: meaning you are not
Banu Abd al-Izza, or Banu Abd al-Laat. Rather, you are Banu Abdullah.
Thankfully, there is no paganism involved in your name, and therefore,
you should enter into Islam. In fact, he was so proficient in his ways in
sending indirect messages to people, showing his amazement to them
and that he wanted good for them. When such indirect messages reach
those intended, then perhaps they may affect them more than direct
messages. Therefore, when people realise that we pay attention to their
good actions just as we pay attention to their bad actions, they will
appreciate our advice.
What have been discussed above are just some additional knowledge
and tips that can be shared with all of you. There might be others but
the solutions to many problems that we may face in our daily life are
present in the life of Allah‟s Messager SAW. His life is certainly an
example for us to follow and a model for us to refer at all times. No
matter what problem arises in our lives, if we look to the Prophet‟s
Seerah for a solution, we will surely find it. Therefore, I hope whatever
have been written above would give some additional tips to become a
better person and a better lecturer. Amin….
