Mr. Per Lothe, Installation and Operation of the Knutsen Ballast Water Treatment
System – KBAL, Knutsen OAS Shipping
Per Lothe graduated with a Degree in Mechanical
engineering from the University of Trondheim
Norway in 1982. Before he joined Knutsen OAS
Shipping, he has 17 year experience within Norsk
Hydro and Statoil within the oil and gas business. In
Knutsen OAS Shipping Per Lothe is responsible to
work with new technology and three of the
inventions are now available to the market. These are
technology for reduction of VOC- KVOC, ballast water
treatment - KBAL and new ship design for marine
transportation of pressurized natural gas - PNG.
Topic: KBAL’s Latest Approach for Ballast Water Treatment Using Pressure/
Vacuum Technology
Session: Feb 18, B1.3, 11:20– 12:00am
Knutsen ballast water technology (KBAL) is a new approach for ballast water
treatment. The invention has been developed within Knutsen OAS Shipping to meet
the future strong requirements for ballast water treatment. KBAL utilizes a
pressure-vacuum process in combination with UV-radiation. A pressure vacuum
reactor working in combination with a vertical ballast water drop line, ensures a
low temperature boiling condition that eliminates the majority of the organisms.
Any remaining algae or bacteria are effectively eliminated by a UV chamber
mounted downstream the pressure vacuum reactor. The treatment is done on
ballast intake and discharge and/or during sailing. For ships on long voyages (i.e. at
least 3-4 days), a treatment by circulation is possible. This special treatment
principle is possible due to the fact that KBAL is not using any filters neither
chemicals.
