Facts about
ANTHRAX
- caused by Bacillus anthracis bacteria
- mostly found in animals such as horses, sheep, goats, and mules
- rare in humans. Only about 1 in 100,000 people who are exposed actually get the disease (from animals).
- Skin Anthrax: bacteria enter through cuts and scratches on skin.
- Intestinal Anthrax: you must eat infected, undercooked meat. This is very rare in developed countries.
- Inhalation Anthrax: dried spores are inhaled. Most dangerous form.
- All forms of the disease can be treated with antibiotics but inhalation anthrax must be treated early.
- anthrax is not passed on from person to person.
- anthrax can kill you.
- anthrax can be used as a biological weapon.
