GRR - Notes on Positive Fecal Test… 02/07/2011 • Notes collected about the various intestinal parasites and bacteria along with treatment needed for various positive fecal tests. • Intake Coordinator and/or Medical Coordinator will work with Foster Coordinator and foster families to ensure treatment and any retests. • Guideline only as vet treatments vary. • Bleach Solution – 1 part bleach to 30 parts water Hookworms Most Heartworm prevention Drontal (appropriate weight/dosage), wait 3 weeks, test, repeat if Retest - every 3 weeks until neg controls hookworms: necessary test result Heartgard, Sentinel, Interceptor Pick up poops Lives in the soil. Note: Other pets are protected if on HW prevention. Fairly common Roundworms Most Heartworm prevention Drontal (appropriate weight/dosage), wait 3 weeks, test, repeat if Retest - every 3 weeks until neg controls roundworms: necessary test result Heartgard, Sentinel, Interceptor Pick up poops Lives in the soil. Note: Other pets are protected if on HW prevention. Rare in adults, common in pups. Whipworms Not as common as other worms. If HW-: use Interceptor and Drontal once monthly for 3 months. Retest If HW+: discuss medication with vet as heartworm microfilaria - 12 weeks from start of Sentinel & Interceptor control die-off may pose health risk. treatment, or 3 weeks after LAST dosage. whipworms; heartgard does not. Giardia Giardia is a bacteria that lives in the Panacur 5-10 days, daily Retest Panacur is a liquid and cannot be mailed. It is very expensive. It - 2 weeks after last Panacur soil and water can be picked up at Emily's or Margo's, delivered to VCA treatment Is extremely contagious. Tanglewood by Margo, or purchased from a vet. Coccidia Coccidia is a bacteria that lives in the soil and water. Is extremely contagious. Start meds immediately. Using gloves, bath dog with any shampoo to remove fecal debris and associated cyst. Pick up poop, use baby wipes to clean the dog, use bleach solution on ground area, all until a negative fecal test GRR will treat other pets in the home if needed (if advised by vet) Albon dewormer 5-10 days, daily GRR does not stock Albon, get from a vet.
