“The Promise” to share news of the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
PINK RIBBON GALA RAISES OVER $250,000
IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER
The Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen celebrated its 20th anniversary
of Race for the Cure on April 13 with a Pink Ribbon Gala at SeaGate Convention
Centre. The event, presented by Heidtman Steel Products, KeyBank, Savage
and Associates, ProMedica and The Blade, was attended by 670 survivors, families and friends.
The evening began with Executive Director, Mary Westphal and Chairperson
Cindy Taylor welcoming the crowd and giving thanks to those in attendance.
Emcee Chrys Peterson of WTOL-TV Channel 11, and Honorary Race for the Cure
Chairman since 1995, continued with an emotional video recap of Northwest
Ohio’s journey to 20 years of local impact in the fight against breast cancer.
Komen Board President, Mary Chris Skeldon shared her personal story as the
evening progressed and shared with the audience how her breast cancer journey began 16 years ago. It has been a tough fight, but she took advice from her
doctor who said “… you stay in life and leave the cancer to me.” She has been in
and out of remission and is battling the disease now, but she keeps on going.
Komen Northwest Ohio was also honored to introduce the Inaugural Group
of Pink Tie Guys and Pink Ribbon Heroes who you can read more about on
page 6.

KOMEN NORTHWEST
OHIO AWARDS OVER
$1 MILLION TO THE
LOCAL COMMUNITY
AND RESEARCH
The 2013 Komen Northwest
Ohio Power of the Promise
Grants Reception, held April 30,
2013, in the McMaster Center
at Toledo-Lucas County Library
in downtown Toledo, was an
inspiring and emotional night
for fundraisers, grantees, and
supporters to reflect on the
promise that Nancy Brinker
made to her sister Susan G.
Komen 30 years ago.
With deep appreciation to the
Komen Northwest Ohio sponsors, race participants, donors
and friends, the local Affiliate
proudly returned more than
$1 million to support uninsured
and underinsured women and
men in our service area as well
as research. Of that $633,000
goes directly to local organizations that will provide direct
services – mammograms, diagnostic procedures and outreach
services. In total this year’s grant
funds will support the delivery of:
n 2,156
mammograms
n 426 treatment and support services
n 3,325 breast health and
educational services
n 105

KOMEN NORTHWEST OHIO AWARDS OVER
$1 MILLION TO THE COMMUNITY AND RESEARCH
(continued from page 1)
In addition, the Northwest Ohio Affiliate distributes over $200,000 in small grants
and mission education outreach as well as $250,000 to research to find the cures.
Mary Westphal, Komen Northwest Ohio Executive Director kicked off the event
with an emotional video highlighting 20 years of local impact in the fight against
breast cancer.
Following the historical video, which highlighted how far the Race has come in
20 years, Komen Board of Directors President Mary Chris Skeldon shared her
personal breast cancer survivor story with the audience. In a message to “Stay in
Life” many were touched by her positive outlook and determination to fight this
disease.
Emcee Chrys Peterson, Komen Northwest Ohio friend and advocate, continued by
recognizing the 25 members of the Pink Honor Roll one by one. The Pink Honor
Roll program celebrates the top 25 fundraisers for the 2012 Komen Northwest
Ohio Race for the Cure. Last year’s Pink Honor Roll members raised over $37,000
of the total Race fundraising revenue.
The evening concluded with the presentation of checks to the 18 grantees who
will provide services for the 2013-2014 grant year. For detailed descriptions of
the Komen Northwest Ohio 2013-2014 community grantees, see the listing at
right. The three continuation grants are Firelands Regional Medical Center, Lima
Memorial Hospital System and North Coast Cancer Foundation.

Thanks to community-wide support, the Northwest Ohio Affiliate was able to
fund $633,000 in community grants in 2013. However, with grant requests
totaling $1.6 million there are still many unmet needs. Our goal is to fully fund
all strong and viable grant requests in Northwest Ohio, therefore every dollar
makes a difference. The need is great and it’s right here in our local community.
