NEW FELINE RABIES VACCINE
Four Corners Veterinary Hospital uses the Merial™
PUREVAX® Feline Rabies vaccine in cats 12 weeks of age
or older. Rabies is transmitted mainly through bite wounds
of infected mammals. More cats than dogs develop rabies in
the United States. Since rabies is a human health concern,
all cats (as long as they are deemed healthy by a
veterinarian) should be vaccinated yearly.
PUREVAX® Feline Rabies vaccine does not contain
adjuvants. All other rabies vaccines do. Non-adjuvanted
vaccines create less inflammation at the injection site.
Adjuvants are substances added to a killed vaccine to
increase the body’s immune response to the vaccine since
the virus is killed and doesn’t stimulate an adequate
response on its own. Adjuvants have been linked to
vaccine-related fibrosarcomas in cats (cancerous tumors at
the site of the vaccine injection). Although this is rare (about
1 in 10,000 cats), it is a major concern of veterinarians since
this type of cancer is extremely malignant, fast-growing and
will spread quickly to other parts of the body.
The doctors at Four Corners Veterinary Hospital have taken
great care in choosing the safest vaccines for your cat.
