Migrating to a digital note-taking system can save you time, space and headaches. But which one should you use? The top two contenders are Evernote and OneNote, and in the chart below they go head to head. A Microsoft software program designed for note taking, research organization and integration with Microsoft software. Mobile apps also available. Types of Notes Notes include typed text, web clippings (customized screenshots), audio, video, photographs and tables. Evernote’s free Skitch program and app lets you annotate notes and draw. Notes include typed text, web clippings, audio, video, photographs, “inking” (drawing with your finger or stylus), tables and Excel spreadsheets. Price Free account provides you with 60MB of free, synchronized cloud storage per month. For $5 per month or $45 per year, the Premium version provides greater uploading capacity, sharing options, access to note history, PDF searching, faster image recognition and no ads. OneNote is part of the Microsoft Office suite along with programs such as Word and Excel. The entire package retails for $150, but you can buy OneNote as standalone software for $79.95. Syncs with SkyDrive and SharePoint (you must be signed into a Microsoft account or a Microsoft Online Services ID). Unique Strengths Tagging allows for advanced note sorting. Web tools include unique URLs and social media sharing. Organize notebooks alphabetically. Images are text searchable. You can mix note-taking mediums (text, scribble, etc.) in the same note.
