The Hikari field research team, designated the “Kamihata Expedition
Team”, is headed by the company’s chairman Mr. Shigezo Kamihata.
Explorations take place as far afield as Irian Jaya, Lake Malawi,
Guiana Highland, Indian Ocean, the jungle of Southeast Asia and
the Holy River Ayeyawady, all of which offer many secrets to fish
health, colouration and long life. Hikari’s highly experienced and
knowledgeable staff combine this invaluable field research experience
with a leading scientific approach at their state of the art research and
development facility in Japan.
The Hikari aquatic laboratory includes a total of 445 aquariums housed
in rooms operating low, high and variable temperatures with water
temperatures also being adjustable between 5ºC and 30ºC to help meet
the needs of any research required. Hikari also have first hand experience
breeding and raising fish, and the scientific data collected during this
process, gives the Hikari team a clear roadmap for future product
development, improvements and enhancements.

Throughout the year the nutritional requirements of pond fish change. During the warmer summer months fish are more active and metabolism is at its highest. This is the time to feed a high quality
protein diet such as Hikari Friend, Staple, Gold or Saki-Hikari Balance, Colour or Growth. As the temperature starts to drop and Autumn sets in, the pond water will cool down and the fishes metabolism
will slow down. When the water temperature is between 10 and 15ºC you should mix a high protein diet with a wheat-germ based food such as Hikari Wheat-Germ or Saki-Hikari Multi-Season. When
the temperature of the water drops below 10ºC you should feed only a wheat-germ based diet. Going into Spring you should reverse the process, starting with a wheat-germ based diet, then combine
wheat-germ and protein and when the water temperature hits 16ºC a high protein diet only. Feed high protein treats, such as Hikari Silkworm Selects when the water temperature is above 20ºC.
