Melting point: 60 - 70oC
Usage levels: 2 - 20%
Syncrowax HRC
Tribehenin
Off-white wax
Softest wax of the range. Non-crystalline structure. Used to modify crystallinity
and rigidity of other waxes. Used in sticks to improve pay-off and gloss and
impart a pleasant afterfeel. Also used as a suspending and thickening agent.
Melting point: 57 - 62oC
Usage levels: 1 - 10%

Product
Physical form
Properties/applications
Argobase 125
Clear pale yellow
liquid
With lanolin derived free cholesterol and other sterols this base is a powerful
emollient and moisturiser which is rapidly absorbed into the skin. Used as a skin and
hair conditioner in anhydrous systems such as bath oils, baby oils, sunscreen oils and
liquid brilliantines. Serves as a W/O emulsifier and an auxiliary O/W emulsifier
imparting a fine smooth texture to skin creams and lotions. Confers emollience and
aids pigment dispersion in colour cosmetics.
Usage levels: 1 - 10%
Argobase S1
Yellow waxy solid
A concentrated absorption base containing a synergistic blend of lanolin and lanolin
alcohols providing a high degree of emollience and powerful nonionic W/O
emulsifying properties. Ideal for ointments, dry skin and barrier creams.
Usage levels: 1 - 10%
Conditioner Base CB00967
White waxy solid
An optimised blend of specially selected conditioners, emulsifiers and stabilising
agents offering an effective route to the formulation of highly functional hair
conditioner systems. With excellent detangling and wet combing benefits this base
can be used alone or in combination with other conditioning agents. Produces
viscous translucent lotions. Leave-on and rinse-off hair conditioners, intensive
conditioning treatments and masks.
Usage levels: 3 - 5%
Crodasperse
Clear, pale yellow
liquid
A highly efficient dispersing agent for inorganic sunscreen actives such as TiO2 and
ZnO as well as colour pigments. Significantly reduces time and complexity of
manufacturing process (no specialised dispersing equipment required). Provides drier
feel on the skin, more stable formulations and gives greater formulation flexibility.
Usage levels: 20 - 30%
Hair Relaxer Base CB02321
Yellow waxy solid
Specially designed to produce highly stable emulsions capable of withstanding the
aggressive nature of hair relaxer systems. This optimised combination of carefully
selected emulsifiers, emollients and conditioning agents represents a simple and
economic route to a base formulation. Additional emollients may be added if
required. Suitable for use in high climatic temperatures.
Usage levels: 10 - 20%
Keralenis
White to off-white
waxy solid
Hair relaxer base that creates stable relaxers at low temperatures and without phase
inversion. A combination of natural substantivity, greater oil deposition and shear
thinning promotes fast release of oil and water-based actives resulting in less
damage to the hair and less scalp irritation.
Usage levels: 10 - 15%
KeraMax+
White waxy solid
A unique blend of conditioning agents, emulsifiers and stabilisers designed to create
an elegant conditioning rinse or intensive treatment by the simple addition of
water at 65°C. Provides proven conditioning benefits for healthy, shiny, more
manageable hair. Compatible with a wide range of hair care actives.
Usage levels: 7 - 12% (conditioning rinse), 10 - 20% (intensive treatment)
Liquid Absorption Base CB01145
Clear, pale yellow
liquid
A blend of lanolin derived sterol in an inert base containing coupling and antigelling agents. Ideal for skin creams and lotions this base offers excellent
emulsifying, moisturising and emollient properties. Primary nonionic W/O emulsifier
and O/W co-emulsifier. Aids the solubilisation of oil soluble sunscreens and the
dispersion of titanium dioxide in sun care preparations. Used in lipsticks to impart
emollience and aid the dispersion of pigments and dyestuffs. Also used in shaving
foams to help create a creamy lather and provide emollience and razor slip.
Usage levels: 2 - 10%
Sebase
Pale yellow waxy
solid
A self emulsifying, nonionic O/W base with excellent emollience and lubricity.
Produces emulsions of varying consistency, from viscous creams to pourable lotions.
Ideal for skin care creams and lotions and suitable for use in depilatories, perming
lotions and neutralisers. Also used as a binder for pressed powders.
Usage levels: 10 - 40%

HLB values
The HLB, or hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, is an expression of the relative simultaneous attraction of a
surfactant for water and oil, i.e. a comparison of the hydrophilic to the lipophilic portion of the surfactant
molecule. HLB values of nonionic surfactants range from about 1 to 20.
The miscibility of a surfactant in water is a guide to its HLB value. Generally those with low HLB values are oil
soluble and those with HLB values greater than 10 are water soluble.
The following table lists properties of surfactants at various HLB values.
HLB value
Surfactant function
Miscibility in water
1–5
Water-in-oil emulsifier
Immiscible or poorly dispersible
5–8
Water-in-oil emulsifier
Oil-in-water emulsifier
Wetting agent
Dispersible
8 – 12
Oil-in-water emulsifier
Wetting agent
Fine particle size opaque to translucent dispersion
12 – 15
Oil-in-water emulsifier
Detergent and solubiliser
Translucent dispersion to clearly soluble
15 – 20
Oil-in-water emulsifier
Detergent and solubiliser
Clearly soluble
When selecting a surfactant using the HLB system, it is necessary to consider its chemical structure. In some
applications a blend of surfactants rather than a single surfactant may be more effective. The list overleaf is
intended for chemists who are acquainted with this system. Assistance can be given should additional
information be required.
