CVS/Caremark announced that patients using a
pharmacy that is NOT Tobacco-free a higher co-pay of
$15 co-pay. Stories appeared in the WSJ and
Huffington Post over the last couple of days and
patients are outraged. While pharmacists have always
emphasized the health risks and discouraged patients
from using tobacco products of any sort, is it right for
CVS to penalize non-smoking patients?



What if there is not a tobacco free pharmacy in
the patient's reasonable commute?
Many non-smoking patients likely do not even
know if their pharmacy sells tobacco or where it
is located. Why are they punished with higher
co-pays and discouraged from using the
pharmacy of their choice?
How will health plans enforce this unfair busines
practice?
PSSNY leadership, along with other state associations,
had a conversation with NCPA this week as this story
came out. We will Keep you informed as more
information develops. In the meantime, encourage your
patients to complain to their health plans if they have
CVS/Caremark for their prescription benefit. Be
proactive and get ahead of this unfair practice.

There is also a website that has been promoted to add
your pharmacy to the list of "Tobacco-Free
Pharmacies" - http://shoptobaccofree.org/ - After
reviewing this website it appears to be very biased to
CVS stores. It is your choice if you add your pharmacy,
if you do and do not feel you are receiving fair
treatment, please complain to the website host.

What beneficiaries need to know and how pharmacists
can help -- The enrollment period began on October 15
and runs through December 7, 2014. During this time,
pharmacists can help Medicare beneficiaries become
aware of the opportunity for enrollment in a new Part D
plan, and inform them of changes taking place in the
program for 2014. It's the one time of year Medicare
recipients can make coverage charges.

As the opioid
overdose epidemic continues to take hundreds of lives
each week, the National Association of Boards of
Pharmacy (NABP) has issues a policy statement
promoting an active role for pharmacists in expanding
access to the opioid overdose reversal drug, naloxone.
State-approved naloxone programs prepare laypersons
and emergency responders to the administer naloxone to
individuals who are experiencing an overdose, with many
state laws now allowing pharmacists to dispense the drug
to family and friends of a person at risk.
