Biography
 Kathryn Griffin-Grinan is the life lessons and recovery
coach at Houston’s Riverside Hospital Detox Unit, Santa
Maria Hostel, and the Harris County Jail. She is the
founder of “We’ve Been There Done That” a 501 c-3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of
women caught in a cycle of many addictions, codependent relationships and women involved with
human sex trafficking, and the commercial sex industry.

Stockholm Syndrome
 Stockholm syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in
which hostages express empathy and have positive feelings
towards their captors, sometimes to the point of defending
them.
 These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of
the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially
mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of
kindness.

Elements of Human Trafficking
Human Trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves an
act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or
receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other
means, for the purpose of exploiting them.
 The Act (What is done)- Recruitment, transportation,
transfer, harbouring
 The Means (How it is done)- Threat or use of force, coercion,
abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power
 The Act (What is done)- For the purpose of exploitation
Drugs and the Underground Commercial
Sex Industry
 Drugs are used to trap victims and keep them at a weaken
state physically, and mentally.
 Used to numb the victims during acts of sexual and physical
abuse.
 While under the continuing influence of drugs; victims are
easily manipulated to confuse sex, abuse and obsession with
love.
 Abusers create the addiction to coerce victims into trading
sex for drugs.
Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery
 Complicated process which involves many people.
 Professional staff (counselors, doctors)
 Family, friends and influencers (religious leader, clergy) of
addicts must also get involved with treatment and recovery.
 12 Step Programs
 Must address both the drug addiction and psychological
effects of the sexual victimization.
 Peer-to-Peer Recovery Coaching
