WORD CLASSES
• Words are divided in classes according to their
functions in context.
• The term generally used is parts of speech.
• A sentence is not a part of speech; it is just the stretch
that contains the Parts of Speech.
• Words as building blocks.

Noun
• Noun comes from the Latin “nōmen “ means name.
• Name of a person, place, thing, idea or belief.
• Abrar , Faisalabad, chair, death, Islam
• Nouns are often preceded by articles.
• They answer the questions who? And what?
Adjective
• Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns.
• Adjectives answer the questions What kind? How
many/much? Whose? Which one?
• Adjectives generally appear before the nouns or
pronouns.
• Articles as adjectives
Pronoun
• Pronouns take the place of nouns.
• Pronouns also answer the questions like who? and
what?
• English pronouns are a lot less complicated than they
used to be like thou, thee, thy, thine.
Verb
• Verbs show physical or mental action of the subject.
• They may also reflect the state of being.
• Answer the question what is happening? What has
happened? And what will happen?
Adverb
• Adverbs are modifiers
• Change the meaning of verb, adjective, another
adverb.
• He drives slowly.
• Mr. Asim is extremely handsome.
• I cannot run very quickly.
Conjunctions
• The words that connect words, phrases and clauses are
conjunctions.
• Make the discourse understandable.
• Coordination
• Subordination
Prepositions
• Preposition is what holds the English language
together.
• Out of twenty five most frequently used words in
English, nine of them are prepositions.
• Show relationship between words.
Interjection
• Interjections are words or short phrases that are used
alone to express strong emotions.
• Followed by exclamation mark (!).
• Hey!
• Wow!
• Oh my God!
