FORTEO is the only anabolic (bone-building) drug currently available on the market that is proven to rebuild your bone mass. This medication is indicated for a total of 2 years of therapy per lifetime. FORTEO reduces the risk of vertebral fractures by about 65% and non-vertebral fractures by about 53% in patients with osteoporosis, after an average of 18 months of therapy. Potential side effects of the drug include arthralgia, leg cramps, nausea, dizziness and injection site reactions. It was found to have an increased incidence of osteoscarcoma in rats treated with high doses and long duration of treatment. The incidence of osteoscaroma in patients treated with FORTEO is no different than the incidence in the non-treated population. Patients with risk for bone cancer or those who have had prior radiation therapy of the skeleton, bone metastases, hypercalcemia or skeletal malignancy should not use FORTEO. Here are instructions to aid you in beginning your therapy with FORTEO: 1. Starter Kit. You have received a blue starter kit. The FORTEO kit contains a video that you and your family can watch to learn more about this therapy. Also, you have received a flyer for optional training classes that you may attend. The training classes are taught by a nurse educator and regularly meet the first Friday of the month. If you plan to attend a class, please let our office know to sign you up. Bring your starter kit and FORTEO pen, if you have received one. If you do not wish to attend a class, Senderra Pharmacy can coordinate over the phone training for you. 2. Dosage. Each FORTEO multi-dose pen contains 28 daily doses of medicine. Take your FORTEO medication one time EVERY DAY for up to 2 years. If you miss a day, do not take multiple doses to catch up. Just begin again with one dose per day. Your FORTEO pen needs to be stored in the refrigerator. Your blue starter kit also has cooler packs for travel. If you need additional support or have questions regarding your FORTEO pen, please contact FORTEO Connect at 1-888-436-7836. 3. Pharmacy. Your prescription has been submitted to Senderra Pharmacy (a mail order specialty pharmacy that will deliver your medicine to your home). They will contact you to let you know what your co-pay amount is and to schedule delivery. Please note they will call from a toll-free number, so it is important for you to answer the call.
