The economy’s sectoral structure (IV)
Tourism is an important sector in the Venezuelan economy and the country possesses considerable
potential in this sector (varied geography, including beaches, plains and mountains). In some areas,
investment in infrastructure is required (namely in relation to business travel). In 2012, the tourism sector
made a direct contribution of 3.1% and an indirect contribution of 8.6% to the country’s GDP. The main
market for Venezuelan tourism is South America, from where 34.2% of tourists arrivals originated, in
2010. However, the number of tourists visiting Venezuela, around 400 thousand in 2010, is much lower
that the number of local tourists: 1.3 million in that year.
