Winery
Producer
In 1857 the brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani
founded the company with the same enthusiasm and
forward-looking approach to produce wines that are
remarkable for their subtle quality. Ownership of the
vineyards has been a constant feature of the company from
generation to generation; Bertani is still one of the few
companies in the area that owns the vineyards where its
grapes are grown. The Bertani company owns vineyards and
cellars in the Valpantena, on the Villa Novare estate in the
Valpolicella, as well as land in the Soave area and in the
areas around Lake Garda. Vineyard: These grapes are
produced in the vineyards of the Bertani Estate in Villa
Novare in Arbizzano of Negrar in the heart of Valpolicella
Classica. The soil, of the eastern side, is of marlcalcareous
composition, while in the western side, a modest stratum of
agrarian soil, covers slabs of calcareous stone.
Manual harvest takes place in the second week of September. A
selection of the best, perfectly ripe and healthy bunches is then
transported to the extremely airy rooms situated in the wine
cellar garret and laid out on cane mats for drying. After about 120
days, withering gives the grapes a thickness, a wide variety of
flavours and a concentration of sugar . In the second half of
January grapes are picked from the bunches and pressed, then
vinified at an initial very low temperature of 4/5°C, finally
reaching 18°C. The slow fermentation that follows the
maceration period (about a total of 50 days) gives the wine a high
level of noble alcohols and glycerine, very important elements
for the elegance and softness of the taste. Aged for 6 years in
Slavonian oak casks, then 12 months in bottle.
Taste
The wine is a deep garnet red colour. The classic cherry flavours
are immediately perceptible to the nose, with notes of plum. The
wine presents a great variety of characters: dry fruit, liquorice
and spice. The wine opens up in the mouth with red-berry fruits
and vanilla.
