1. NARRATIVE SUMMARY:
Munavu is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi. He attended Kalamazoo
College (B.A.) from 1967 to 1970; Wayne State University (M.Sc. in Chemistry) from 1970
to 1972; and the University of Detroit ( Ph. D. in Chemistry) from 1972 to 1975. His areas
of academic specialization are Natural Products , Organic Synthesis, Environmental and
Industrial chemistry.
Munavu has published over sixty (60) refereed and commissioned papers and supervised
twenty one (21) post graduate students in Chemistry. He has written teaching manuals in
Organic Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry and Renewable
Resources of Energy.
He has been an external examiner in Chemistry at the University of Malawi, University of
Zimbabwe, and the University of Dar-Es-Salaam between 1983- 1990. He co-organized the
first and second conferences of the International Chemistry Conference series in Africa in
1979 and in 1981 respectively. He was recently instrumental in convening the first
international conference on Internationalization in African Universities held at Moi
University in August 2002.
Prof. Munavu was Vice-Chancellor of Moi University from July 14th ,1998 to September 19th,
2002. He has held several Senior Administrative positions in universities in Kenya during
the last fifteen (15) years. He was Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of
Nairobi (1987- 1990); the founding Principal of Laikipia College of Egerton University
(1990- 1992); the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance) at Egerton
University (1992- 1994); and the DVC (A&F) at the University of Nairobi (1994-1998).
In addition to regular administrative responsibilities, Munavu spearheaded the
establishment of International Programme Offices at the University of Nairobi (1995) and
at Moi University (1999), and Privately Sponsored Students Programmes at Moi University
(1998). He was instrumental in establishing academic linkages between Moi University and
tertiary institutions in Kenya (1999); and directorates of University- Industry Relations and
HIV/AIDS control at Moi University (2000).
Munavu is the current Chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council (2000present), Vice-Chairman and Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences, and
Chairman of the Board of Governors of UKAI agricultural institute. He is a member of the
District Education Board of Machakos District. Previously, Munavu served as Hon. Secretary
of the Association of Faculties of Science of African Universities, AFSAU, between 19861992.
He was conferred with the national honours, Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) in 1994,
and the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) in 2001, for his services in the Higher Education
Sector. In 2000, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters, Honoris causa
(D.Litt) by Kalamazoo College (USA), in recognition of his role in entrenching successful
inter-university linkages between universities in Kenya and other foreign universities.
Munavu participates in a variety of community development strategies such as treeplanting and education of disadvantaged children. His social vision is to serve society by
initiating novel wealth-creating and capacity-building initiatives based on education,
water, culture and value-adding enterprises.

10. RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS
The main research thrust is to discover and develop appropriate chemical processes for the
conversion of locally available resources into useful materials. Studies in progress include

The extraction, chemical studies, and potential uses of vegetable oils from
the seeds of local plants.
Conversion of readily-available carbohydrates into furfural and
hydroxymethyl-furfural.
The extraction and chemical studies of essential oils from indigenous and
exotic plants.
Chemical studies of biologically-active extractives from local medicinal
herbs. We have screened local plants for the presence of saponins and
anthraquinones.
The contribution of chemical science and technology to the agricultural
and manufacturing sectors of the national economy.
The behaviour of alcohols in the presence of DMSO, dialkylsulphides and
bromine.
