Electrical (Appliance Servicing)
Employees in the Electrical (Appliance Servicing) trade set up, service and repair electrical, gas, and
refrigerated appliances. They service small appliances and power tools, clothes washers and dryers
and dishwashing machines.
They dismantle, assemble and fabricate electrotechnology components, solve problems in extra-low
voltage single path circuits, fix and secure equipment, prepare refrigeration tubing and fittings,
determine the basic operating conditions of vapour compression systems, recover pressure, leak
test, evacuate and charge refrigerants.
They may also perform the following tasks:
• find and rectify faults in appliance motors and associated controls
• find and rectify faults in appliance control devices and systems
• apply lead-free soldering techniques
• use drawings, diagrams, schedules and manuals
• provide basic instruction in the use of electrotechnology apparatus
• provide quotations for installation or service jobs
If you are seeking recognition in the Electrical (Appliance Servicing) trade, you must provide evidence
demonstrating the nature and duration of your employment, such as:
• log books or job cards illustrating the nature of trade work you have performed
• work-related references from employers and qualified supervisors outlining the duration of
employment and detailing the nature of work you have performed, procedures applied and
tools and equipment used which are consistent with the Electrical (Appliance Servicing) trade.
References must be signed, dated and on your employer’s letterhead.
• formal training records, evidence of relevant training completed to date
• any other evidence that demonstrates that you are competent or trained to work in the
Electrical (Appliance Servicing) trade.
NB The NSW Office of Fair Trading has licensing requirements for issuing a "Restricted Electrical
License" associated with servicing and repairing appliances.
The federal Australian Refrigeration Council Ltd has requirements for the Restricted Domestic
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Appliance Licence which is required to handle a refrigerant for any
work on appliances.
