AUNTIE LANI’S LEI STAND AND FLORAL SHOP ONLINE
Click on the link to see images of leis available in each style.
Melia lei—Also known as the plumeria
lei, this is the most popular lei in the
Hawaiian islands. These leis are made
from
the
fragrant
flowers
of
the
plumeria tree, which grows abundantly
in Hawaii. Found in every lei stand from the airport in Hilo to
the streets of Waikiki, these are the most popular leis. They
are inexpensive, yet beautiful.
Kukui Nut Lei—The kukui nut come from a tree
that grows in Hawaii. Kukui nuts are an inch to an
inch and a half in diameter, and are rich brown or
black in color. To make leis from these nuts, a
hole is drilled in each end of each nut, and the
nuts are threaded on a ribbon and tied around the neck.
These leis are popular for men. Sometimes a bit more
expensive than melia leis, kukui nut leis are popular because
they last much longer. Kukui nut leis are sometimes strung
with leaves or other flowers, as seen here on the neck of
Honolulu Mayor, Mufi Hannemann.
Puka Shell Leis—The puka shell is a small, coneshaped shell. These shells are very fragile. If
cared for properly, these leis can last a very long
time. However, the small puka shells are easily broken. Puka
shell leis are made by threading a thin string through the
natural holes in the shell, or drilling small holes at the end.
These leis are inexpensive to make.
