Native to: East and Southeast Asia (Japan, China, Indochina, Assam, Bangladesh, Borneo.
The Arecaceae are the first modern family of monocots appearing in the fossil record around 80 million
years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Monocots are one of the two major types of flowering plants.
Monocots have only one seed leaf inside the seed coat. Dicots have two seed leaves inside the seed coat.
The plant is actually inedible when raw because of needle-shaped raphides (calcium oxalate crystals) in
the plant cells. In Japan, there are several cases of food poisoning by accidental consumption.
