Ochna, Mickey Mouse plant
- Ochna serrulata
Form: Shrub 1-2 tall.
Leaves: Evergreen, single along stems, oval, finely toothed, 2-4cm long, dark green and glossy.
Flowers: Spring & summer; 2cm across, sepals green, 5 yellow petals
Fruits: Summer & autumn; swollen red centre & sepals, 3-6 black glossy berries c. 7mm long.
Seeds spread by birds.
Impacts: Slight unless dense. Invasive & exotic. Still found in gardens as ornamental shrubs; should be
eradicated where possible.
Control: Difficult. Cut and poison seedlings and plants (usually regrows); dig out, cutting tap root as
deeply as possible. See DPI Fact Sheet for current herbicide recommendations.
Ongoing management: Check area every second year and control new and regenerating plants
before flowering.
