Paul’s Picks
4.5” annuals: flats of 10
Alternanthera ‘Brazilian Red Hots’: There’s just nothing like it. Very brightly colored, thrives in heat
and humidity as long as there’s ample moisture. It’s especially stunning en masse.
Calibrachoa: The quintessential container annual. We have lots of colors in full bloom including doubles.
Veggies and herbs: I’m very happy with how these finished. Add a few to your order – you’ll be happy!
Perennials:
Astilbe: We had reason to believe Deutschland would bloom the wrong color, so we held them back, but
now they’re all white, just like they’re supposed to be, and they’re huge and in full bloom. Now, now,
now! ‘Vision in Pink’ – particularly well suited to our heat – is full and budded as well.
Aubrieta Madly Blue Violet: A new perennial from PW this year. A tight Aubrieta in full bloom.
Delosperma cooperi and ‘Mesa Verde’: Both full, lightly budded, and exceptionally drought tolerant.
Dianthus Scent First Passion: A new, fully double, fragrant, true red, mini carnation. Buds and
bloom(s).
Echinacea ‘Kim’s Knee High’: short, relatively full, budded and moments from blooming.
Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’ and ‘Siskiyou Pink’: Buds and blooms on natures butterfly imitator.
Heuchera: ‘Cinnabar Silver’ is full with buds and blooms – a nice combo of rust colored flowers over
silver foliage. ‘Mint Julep’ is my favorite of recent intros. Chartreuse with a prominent silver overlay.
‘Peach Flambe’ is a orangish maroon classic that does well in full sun if acclimated. ‘Rave On’ has
beautiful silver foliage on a smaller plant, but it’s the hot pink flowers against the foliage that excites me
most. ‘Southern Comfort’ looks very similar to Caramel, but with much larger leaves and better color
retention in shade.
Hemerocallis: Stella and Happy Returns are full, budded, and blooming. Earlybird Cardinal – the
first everblooming red - is full, with a few buds and blooms, and a positively ENORMOUS required tag.
Kalimeris ‘Blue Star’: An impressive little aster look alike that boasts scads of periwinkle colored
flowers over a very long window. Prune it after flowering for another round of blooms.
Leucanthemum ‘Daisy Mae’: A very dwarf daisy with a big bloom just like Becky.
Monarda: deer resistant thanks to the fragrant foliage (smells like Fruit Loops to me), and a great plant
for hummers and butterflies. We have several colors – including my favorite ‘Dark Ponticum’
Oxalis ‘Cottage Pink’: A perennial Oxalis that never stops flowering. Great for shade gardens or pots.
Polemonium ‘Bressingham Purple’: rich, dark purplish foliage with large (for a Polemonium) blue
flowers.
Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’: Possibly the coolest plant of the spring for us - it’s brand new
from Terra Nova and looks just like ‘Henry Eilers’ but at only 3-4’ tall it’s a much more manageable
size.
Sedum Uprights: Few things are as tough and reliable as the upright Sedums. The problem had always
been they look great in the spring but open up in summer when they get big. The introduction of new
varieties over the last few years has helped to solve that issue. We have a good selection of compact
varieties.
Selaginella uncinata: One of my new favorite plants for shaded mixed containers. We had it in most of
ours at home last year and it draped beautifully over the edge of the containers. The iridescent sheen on
the foliage compliments many container colors too. These are overwintered so they’re very beefy!
Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’: A short version of the perennial favorite butterfly verbena. Budded.
Pennisetum ‘Cassian’: simply the best, reliably hardy, smaller fountain grass on the market. Pots are full.
