Bamboo Varieties 2016
LARGE RUNNING BAMBOOS
Running bamboos are spreaders and need room to grow but can be curbed to the desired growing area. See
the Sky Nursery Bamboo Care Sheet for information.
Phyllostachys aurea. GOLDEN BAMBOO.
Height 10-20 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Likes sun. Dense foliage—excellent screen or hedge plant. Tolerates
drought, but looks better with regular water. Tolerates wind. Edible shoots. Does well in containers.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’.
GREEN GROOVE BAMBOO.
Height 15-25 feet. Hardy to -10º F. Likes sun. Rare form—yellow canes have green pinstriping. Dark shiny
foliage. Edible shoots.
Phyllostachys bissettii. DAVID BISSETT BAMBOO.
Height 15-20 feet. Hardy to -15º F. Likes sun. Dense dark foliage on 1” gray-green culms. Handsome plant.
Phyllostachys edulis. MOSO BAMBOO.
Height 40-50 feet—ultimately to 80 feet, but slow-growing in cooler climates. Hardy to 0º F. Likes sun. 4-7”
culms; small, fine foliage makes the canes look larger. Edible, tasty shoots—most popular variety in China.
Phyllostachys nigra. BLACK BAMBOO.
Height 15-30 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Likes sun with afternoon shade. New culms green, turn black second year.
Enjoy the black stems by “legging up” the canes. Edible shoots.
Phyllostachys rubromarginata
RED MARGIN BAMBOO
Height 30-40 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Dark green culms with red margin. Sturdy and erect. Tolerates alkaline
soils and strong winds. Great screening plant.
Phyllostachys vivax. GIANT TIMBER BAMBOO
Height 40-60 feet. Hardy to -10º F. Mature culms can reach 7” diameter; this is the preferred variety for
building. Handsome, dark green, drooping foliage. Likes sun. Edible shoots.
DWARF/GROUNDCOVER RUNNING BAMBOOS
Dwarf running bamboos are spreaders and need room to grow but can be curbed to the desired growing
area. The following variety can be maintained at under 6’ in height. They are great in containers.
Pleioblastus fortunei aka P. variegatus.
DWARF WHITE STRIPE BAMBOO.
Height 2-4 feet. Hardy to -10º F. Likes sun or shade; tolerates wind. Attractive upright spiky emerald and
white foliage. Mow or clip in spring to encourage fresh new growth. Great for around trees.

Pleioblastus viridistriatus.
GOLDEN VARIEGATED DWARF BAMBOO (AKA GREENSTRIPE BAMBOO).
Height 2-4 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Likes sun or shade; tolerates wind. Lemon yellow leaves with green striping
in sun; chartreuse and dark green in shade. Tolerates wetter soil.
Pleioblastus viridistriatus var. chrysophyllus. GOLDEN DWARF BAMBOO.
Height 2-4 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Likes sun or shade; tolerates wind. Lemon yellow leaves in sun; chartreuse
in shade. Tolerates wetter soil.
CLUMPING BAMBOOS
Clumping bamboos do not spread by aggressive rhizomes like the runners do. These plants increase their
clump size (like daylilies) and need no special control.
Chusquea culeou.
CHUSQUEA CULEOU BAMBOO.
Height 15-20 feet—spread 6-8 feet. Hardy to 0º F. Sun or part shade. Tolerates wind and some drought—
good for hedge or windbreak. Well-behaved. Feathery-looking clumps; broad arching habit. Canes are solid
rather than hollow.
Fargesia denudata
DENUDATA FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 10-12 feet—spread 3-6 feet. Hardy to -10º F. Likes partial shade. Weeping habit—delicate leaves on
light green canes.
Fargesia nitida.
BLUE FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 10-12 feet—spread 6-8 feet. Hardy to -20º F. Likes partial shade. Dark purplish canes are covered
with bluish-white powder when young. Delicate foliage.
Fargesia nitida ‘Jiuzhaigou’
RED FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 10-12 feet—spread 6-8 feet. Hardy to -20º F. Likes bright indirect light—not full sun. Exciting new
introduction from China has pea-green new canes, turning burgundy red in the second year, eventually
changing to yellow. Delicate small leaves; beautiful fall color.
Fargesia robusta
ROBUSTA FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 15-18 feet—spread 3-6 feet. Sun or shade; tolerates wind. Ideal for tall hedge or grove effect. Shiny,
olive green leaves. White colored cane sheaths make stunning geometric pattern against green new shoots.
Fargesia rufa
RUFA FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 7-8 feet—spread 5-6 feet. Hardy to -20º F. Likes sun or partial shade. Orange-red culm sheaths—
1/2” culms. Perfect for small garden. Does well in containers.
Fargesia scabrida
ASIAN WONDER FOUNTAIN BAMBOO.
Height 12-14 feet—spread 3-6 feet. Sun or shade. Ideal for hedge or specimen planting. Perhaps the most
exciting colors of any hardy clumping bamboo: the young culms have dark orange sheaths, opening
gradually to reveal steel-blue and lavender culms, aging to an olive green. Leaves are dark green and airy.
