Polka (1996)
Romantica, Large-flowered Climber
Peach-flowered climber that combines old-rose fashion with repeat flowering, disease resistance
and winter hardiness of a modern shrub. The 10-12’ canes are ideal for pillars, walls and fences.

cotton candy pink flowers are sweetly fragrant and cover the long pendulous branches. The
nearly thorn less stems will cascade 3' - 4'. Available in spring only.
Rhapsody in Blue (2006)
New for 2007!
Shrub: Bush
No other rose color is like this one. Nearly true-blue blossoms open wide to show a little white at
the center and a cluster of yellow stamens. Some petals have a streak of white at the midline.
The flowers are set against grey-green leaves and have a moderate, spicy fragrance. The shrub
has an upright, bushy, pillar form. This remarkable beauty demands moderate temperatures to
look its best.
Ronald Reagan Rose (2004)

Outstanding in floral arrangements. Light, sweet fragrance; disease resistant. A fitting tribute to

well-structured specimen. Vigorous, disease resistant, and very free flowering.
Secret (1992)

creamy ivory edged in coral pink, changing to deep rose as the bloom matures. Their strong spicy
fragrance never fails to attract attention. An abundance of glossy, dark green foliage.
September Mourn (2003)
Floribunda: Bush, Tree
‘September Mourn’ is a spectacular white Floribunda that’s an offspring of ‘Iceberg’, but even
prettier in Lorena's opinion. Bouquet-worthy blossoms set off by dark, disease resistant foliage. I
saw it in the heat of the Central Valley looking absolutely lovely. A compact 3’ shrub, it can be
grown in containers or as a low hedge. Royalties from the sale will be donated to the Disaster
Relief Fund of the Salvation Army.

yellow rose for the cutting garden and for leaving on the bush. What a beauty! Disease resistant.

The first of the lavender hybrid teas and still one of the best. The silvery mauve color is very
beautiful and very different from other roses. Classic, medium-large, double blooms have a sweet
citrus and fruit fragrance. Good cut flowers that look especially stunning in silver or pewter vases.

Rose Categories Demystified
Here at Yamagami’s, we arrange our roses into these categories:
BUSH-TYPE ROSES
ANTIQUES These are the old roses from which modern varieties were developed. As
garden plants they are grown for their simple charm and beauty; they are famous for three
characteristics: fragrance robustness and flowering only once or twice in a season; exceptions
noted in descriptions.
ENGLISH or AUSTIN ROSES One of the first great breeders of the modern rose was
David Austin, an Englishman. His collection of shrub roses has come to be called the ‘Austin’ or
‘English’ roses. They were the first to bloom continuously through the season, and are still grown
for their inimitable form, color and fragrance. (N.B. In the nursery, English roses are displayed in
the Floribunda section.)
EUROPEAN ROSES include important new modern roses from European breeders,
particularly the French, such as the Meidiland and Generosa series.
HYBRID TEAS The form of the Hybrid Tea rose has become an archetype. These roses,
and no others, have overlapping petals enclosing a bud, which tends to project (i.e. “high
centered” buds). Single blossoms are produced on long stems suitable for cutting, and are often
fragrant. The plants themselves tend to be rather delicate, compared to other categories, and
average 4-6 ft in height. They are grown alone as specimens, also in beds and borders.
FLORIBUNDAS Blooms are small, borne in clusters of 5-10 flowers. The plants are
generally more robust and disease resistant than the Hybrid Teas, hence easier to care for, but
tend to be smaller, averaging 3-4’ in height. The main use of floribundas is for mass color, as few
plants of any kind can produce so much color for such a long period.
GRANDIFLORAS This relatively small and modern category represents attempts to
combine Hybrid Tea form with Floribunda munificence. Blooms resemble the Hybrid Teas in form,
but are borne in small clusters. Plants average 5-7’ in height. (N.B. In the nursery, Grandifloras
are displayed together with the Hybrid Teas.)
SHRUB ROSES In the main, shrub roses are the product of crossing various old species
roses with modern roses in order to get large, gracefully spreading plants which flower
continuously and require little attention-that is, ideal landscape shrubs. They vary tremendously in
size and character. English roses are included in this class.
MINIATURES
These are diminutive roses that seldom reach more than 3’ in height. Flowers, too, are smaller,
generally 2-3” in diameter. Their continuous bloom is great for adding color in the garden and in
containers.
CLIMBERS
“Large-Flowered Climbers” are true climbing roses. Others (which is most) are generally sports of
shrub roses-that is, chance offshoots which grow to uncommonly great lengths. All are best
grown on walls and fences, training the long canes horizontally or in a fan-like manner. In this
way, they will shoot and flower much more freely. The blossoms of many climbing varieties are
long lasting and long stemmed, making them excellent for bouquets.
TREE ROSES
Tree roses are not a true category. Almost any variety can be grown as a tree by grafting the
desired variety on top of a columnar rootstock. Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, and miniatures are
most often grown in this manner. Tree roses seem to be less susceptible to disease. This is
perhaps a result of better air circulation.
