Ecosystems are important parts of nature.
An ecosystem includes all the living and
nonliving things in an area. Ecosystems can
be large areas, such as oceans, rain forests,
and deserts. They can also be small areas.
A rotting log and an aquarium are both small
ecosystems.
The living parts of an ecosystem are
organisms such as plants and animals.
Ecosystems usually have a variety of plants
and animals in them. The nonliving parts of
an ecosystem include rocks, soil, and water.
The climate, or pattern of weather in an
area, is also a nonliving part of an ecosystem.
A tropical rain forest is an example of a
large ecosystem. The living parts of a rain
forest include trees, monkeys, worms, and
butterflies. It is hot and rainy in a tropical
rain forest. Temperature and water are
nonliving parts of the ecosystem. A rain
forest also has rocks and soil on the ground.
Rocks and soil are other nonliving parts of the
ecosystem.
A pond is another type of ecosystem. The
living parts of a pond might include plants,
fish, frogs, turtles, and insects. The
temperature of the pond water is a nonliving
part of the ecosystem. Water, sand, mud,
and rocks are also nonliving parts of a pond
ecosystem.
