PROPAGATION OF NEPENTHES Project Overview Intellectual Property Status This is a propagation system to mass production of Nepenthes spp. for commercial benefit. Patent Filed/Pending - PI 2013701344 Product / Service Image Ready for Commercialization Project Status Project Leader Prof. Dr. Normah Mohd Noor Institute of System Biology UKM Competitive Advantages The process is useful for genetically engineering, high value plant transplants, seedless fruits and vegetables, economically or uniformly. Besides, this technique allows for the production of large numbers of plants from small pieces of stock plant in relatively short periods of time. Technology / Innovation Summary Micropropagation is the practice of rapidly multiplying stock plant material to produce a large number of progeny plants, using modern plant tissue culture methods. Business Opportunity (i) Global cell and tissue culture suppliers will continue to heighten their focus on solving challenges faced by those in the laboratory, requiring innovation and smart, productive solutions that can improve life in the lab while advancing the pace of discovery. Market Overview (i) The global cell and tissue culture supplies market was valued at more than USD 16 billion in 2014. The market will grow at a CAGR of 9.5% from 2014, potentially reaching more than USD 28 billion by 2020. In addition, the demand for biopharmaceuticals is also a substantial contributor to the growth of the cell culture market where the global biopharmaceutical industry is predicted to exceed USD 167 billion in 2015. 3D cell culture has become especially popular due to its better representation of in vivo conditions than traditional 2D culture. This has resulted in a rapid increase of the 3D cell culture market value, which is expected to reach over USD 2 billion by 2019, with a five-year CAGR of 30.1%. Competitive Environment Overview The Sarawak Forestry Corporation says only one company, Malesiana Tropicals, has been given a permit from Forest Department Sarawak to propagate nepenthes, and only second generation (F2) propagated plants can be exported. As for international players, they include ExoticaPlants, Leilani Hapu'u Nursery, Borneo Exotics and etc. Project Challenges The key challenge for this project is to gain regulatory approvals such as the wildlife protection and conservation in Malaysia – which might be a time consuming process in some cases. Financial Overview The financials are developed based on a case study of a major supplier of pitcher plants of Nepenthes in Sarawak, Malaysia. According to The Star Online (2009), the trade in nepenthes in Sarawak peaked in 2005, with 22,483 plants exported. Numbers have since fallen to 15,220 in 2006 and 12,055 in 2007. Since the worldwide demand of Nepenthes is increasing, taking a more conservative estimation, we are assuming the trade numbers of Nepenthes will be valued at 15,220. The price of Nepenthes ranges from USD 199 to USD 5 - assuming an average price of USD 50 gives us an estimated market size of RM 2.75 million. Targeting a conservative market penetration of 20% of this market by year 3, and including the global market growth at a CAGR of 9.5% - Financial Requirement The key funding component is for pre-commercialization stage, especially legal expenses for wildlife protection and conservation regulatory control which must be completed before commercialization.
